Holy Moments
On May 11, 2013, I received my Master of Theological Studies from Brite Divinity School. I was surrounded by family and friend as I was hooded and given my diploma. It was a beautiful, joyful, holy, and exciting day.
On May 11, 2015, exactly two years after I received my MTS, I found myself in the prison of Basse-Terre, Guadeloupe, leading my weekly English Bible study. As we ended our session, I asked the group about Bibles. Many of them had asked me several times for a Bible in English. While each man had received a New Testament, they were all still anxious to get a full Bible in English. "Okay, well, I only have this one Bible right now. I will continue to ask around and hopefully I'll find one for everyone soon," I said.
Hearing this, one of the men, "D", who may be released shortly, asked, "Can I have it?"
I looked at the rest of the group and said, "Well, it's okay with me if it's okay with you guys." Each one nodded their head yes and so I gave the Bible to "D".
His eyes lit up as he held his new Bible in his hand. "Wow! This is my Bible," he said. Then he added, "Actually... could you sign this for me? Sign it and date it, please. Because even when I leave here, this will still be my Bible. I want to remember that you were my pastor during this time of my life." I smiled and gladly added my signature and the date to the front page of the Bible. I handed it back to "D", and watched him part with a big grin on his face.
Both the graduation and the giving of the Bible were precious, holy moments, and one was only possible because the other paved the way. For all of these things, I give God great thanks.
