Tulsa kindergarten gardeners learn lessons at urban garden

Kindergarten classes from Lewis and Clark Elementary School, StoneSoup, and Phillips Theological Seminary students and staff met up May 6 for a tour of Seeds of Hope, a community garden adjacent to the seminary.

The Seeds of Hope community garden was planted in order to educate and empower people living in the area. Volunteers with StoneSoup Community Venture, a National Benevolent Association incubate partner, and Phillips Seminary have previously visited with the kindergarten classes at Lewis and Clark Elementary School to conduct a planting demonstration and tell stories about growing food. The volunteers for The Story, Soil and Seeds Presentation also discussed the importance of nutrition and sharing of food with others.

The produce from the garden will be used in a meal prepared for the community by StoneSoup's primary project, Tulsa's Table, a pay-what-you-can community cafe. StoneSoup's mission is to establish food justice projects that move people from dependency to autonomy. More than 40 percent of residents in the three ZIP codes surrounding Phillips have incomes below the poverty level. And more than half of the children living in those ZIP codes live below the poverty level.

Christian Church Foundation board meets

The Christian Church Foundation is positioning itself for another record year, thanks to new gifts to permanent funds and deposits to partner investment accounts. Foundation President Gary Kidwell, at the Board of Directors spring meeting in Indianapolis late last month, said new permanent gifts in just the first quarter of 2015 are already at half the five-year average for gifts. The number of new gift agreements so far is half of what was recorded in 2014, another indicator of good things to come. The Foundation started 2015 with $618.0 million in assets, which includes permanent funds held in trust and managed funds owned by Disciples congregations, regions, general ministries and other related institutions.

Welcoming the stranger

June 20 is World Refugee Day and Disciples Home Missions' Refugee and Immigration Ministry (RIM) has new resources - an 18-page toolkit -  posted to help you become an advocate for those without a voice.

For those who are called to help with resettlement, churches are asked to consider helping with at least three of the following types of welcoming activities, according to the church's choice:  setting up an apartment for a new refugee or family, providing a contribution for rent, gathering furniture and household items, stocking the pantry with culturally appropriate groceries, meeting the refugee/s at the airport, providing a welcoming meal, accompanying the refugee/s to a medical appointment, teaching basic English or financial literacy education, assisting the refugees to prepare for a job, offering transportation assistance, and creatively "touring" the refugees throughout your neighborhood.

There are more refugees in the world now than during World War II.  Contact Sharon Stanley-Rea, director of Refugee & Immigration Ministries at sstanley@dhm.disciples.org or 202-957-7826 for more information about refugee engagement options in your area.

Mothers Day emphasis for detained women and children

In recent months, Refugee and Immigration Ministries and Disciples Women have partnered to pray and act against family detention for immigrant mothers and children-who have fled horrific conditions of violence in their homelands of Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala to seek protection in the U.S. Instead, thousands are housed in large detention centers run by private prison companies for many months. Even though most are eligible for asylee status, release is rare, and immigrants must pay bond amounts of often as much as $10,000 to gain freedom as they await immigration court appearances.  Over the next weeks surrounding Mother's Day, multiple events will be held throughout the country to raise up these concerns of these vulnerable mothers and children. See the Mothers Day Toolkit for many ways that you can best support and pray for them.
