Learn before you go, during and after

General Assembly is one of the premiere opportunities for learning both in the organized learning communities and in other settings such as after sessions, exhibit hall booths and meal events. Here are even more opportunities you may have missed.

Common reading: The Lemon Tree

The Disciples Peace Fellowship and Global Ministries are collaborating on a common read of The Lemon Tree by Sandy Tolan. You can read the book before you come and then join a discussion group while you're in Columbus. If you can't attend the Assembly, consider holding a book discussion at home - within your congregation or in partnership with other congregations in your community.

"The Lemon Tree" is a carefully researched history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that reads like a novel. It focuses on two families whose stories intersect because of their shared connection to the same home, during different periods of time. It is a wonderfully accessible way to learn more about the complicated dynamics of this seemingly intractable situation.

Disciples Peace Fellowship will be hosting book discussion sessions at our booth throughout the Assembly.  Watch for more information about how to sign up for the session that fits your schedule. You can RSVP on Facebook.

Youth curriculum
You can download a pre-assembly curriculum for youth from Chalice Press for only $3.99. The four-part series helps youth (and counselors) understand the general expression of the Church a little better.

Land rights and food security in the Gran Chaco region

Dawn Barnes, transitional program associate for Week of Compassion, recently traveled to the Gran Chaco in Paraguay and Bolivia with our partners at Church World Service (CWS) and Foods Resource Bank. Week of Compassion has long supported the Chaco Region by providing access to clean water, women's empowerment initiatives, food security and land rights accompaniment. Please join us on May 12, 2015 at 7:00p.m. EDT  for a webinar to learn how your Compassion has been put into Action. Register now!

The Gran Chaco Region is an immense area in the heart of South America covering almost 1 million square miles. Although this region stretches across northern Argentina, southwest Paraguay and southeast Bolivia, it is located far from the capitals.

The Chaco is the biggest forest reserve on the continent after the Amazon and the largest dry forest in the world. A major eco-system, it is also a region with great cultural diversity, home to 25 different indigenous ethnic groups including communities who for centuries lived as semi-nomadic hunter gatherers before losing most of their land.

Now in its tenth year the Chaco Program supports efforts by the indigenous peoples to reclaim their ancestral lands and assists them to improve food security and nutrition.

Register for the Gran Chaco Webinar on May 12, 2015 at 7:00pm EDT.

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.

Mothers Day emphasis for detained women and children

In recent months, Refugee and Immigration Ministries and Disciples Women have partnered to pray and act against family detention for immigrant mothers and children-who have fled horrific conditions of violence in their homelands of Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala to seek protection in the U.S. Instead, thousands are housed in large detention centers run by private prison companies for many months. Even though most are eligible for asylee status, release is rare, and immigrants must pay bond amounts of often as much as $10,000 to gain freedom as they await immigration court appearances.  Over the next weeks surrounding Mother's Day, multiple events will be held throughout the country to raise up these concerns of these vulnerable mothers and children. See the Mothers Day Toolkit for many ways that you can best support and pray for them.
