First ecumenical baptism conference held in Jamaica
A three-day consultation took place involving representatives from six different "believers baptism" church traditions to share their understandings and practices of baptism and to explore how their thinking has changed in light of the emerging theological convergence on baptism and growing ecumenical encounter over the past 30 years. This was the first time such a gathering has taken place, and thus represents an historic moment in the life of these traditions.
The initiative for the consultation grew out of the annual meeting of Secretaries of Christian World Communions in 2012, which noted fresh thinking and official agreements around the mutual recognition of baptism between churches who practice "infant baptism" and those who have practiced "believers baptism" have been observed. Nestor Gomez Morales, right, with his fellow travelers.
|
Justice and peace is the commitment to construct and create new possibilities for life, says Nestor Gomez Morales, who worships at a congregation of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Denver, United States. It entails not only hope for all living creatures, he explains, but a promise to work for the dignity and human rights of those who are suffering. Nestor, originally from Colombia, relates injustice to his fight for the dignity and rights of undocumented immigrants. Growing up in the violence of a narcotics trafficking city where civilians were routinely killed in cross-fire made him sensitive to suffering and oppression. Read full story

New U.S. immigration programs help Disciples
When President Obama announced his Executive Actions on Immigration last November, many Disciples listened intently to learn about their own futures. Under the new programs, certain undocumented parents and young people will receive temporary relief from deportation (deferred action) and work permits.

Brite, TCU host Ministers Week
On Feb. 9-12, 2015 Brite Divinity School and Texas Christian University will host Ministers Week 2015. This year marks Brite Divinity School's 100th anniversary and the insight expressed by Rev. Carey Morgan in his dedication address remains as true today as it did on Feb. 9, 1915, "The preacher must know the age in which he [or she] lives, because while the gospel is always the same, the church is a part of the age and is profoundly influenced by it."
The age has certainly changed and, as is inherent in any new surroundings, both challenges and exciting opportunities exist for the 21st century church. No clear, certain map can guide us to the future, only waymarks pointing to the near horizon. Join us as together we explore through preaching, lectures, and short talks by fellow clergy glimpses into the cultural landscape and how some faith communities are finding new ways to be Christ's transforming presence in the world. For more information or to register, please visit www.brite.edu/mw Registration is free.
