Introducing the worship preachers for General Assembly 2015
In a scant eight months, we will gather in Columbus, Ohio, to hear God's comfort, call and challenge in Isaiah 40. The preachers scheduled to join us will bring their unique perspectives to bear as they deliver God's word.
Saturday | Comfort | Isaiah 40:1-2, 26-30
The Rev. Teresa (Terri) Hord-Owens has one foot in academia as Dean of Students at the University of Chicago Divinity School and the other in congregational life as the senior pastor of Downers Grove Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). She also has a rich history from the African-American church that shapes her preaching.
Monday | Call | Isaiah 40: 6-8
The Rev. Dr. Amy Butler is the first woman to be senior minister at The Riverside Church in New York City. Prior to her call to NYC, Butler served 11 years at Calvary Baptist (ABCUSA) in Washington DC and was also the first woman to lead that congregation. She grew up in Hawaii, learning the "compelling gift of diverse community."
Tuesday | Challenge | Isaiah 40: 9, 12-18
The Rev. Dr. Geoffrey Black is currently the General Minister and President of the United Church of Christ, our partner denomination for more than 25 years. With a background in congregational service, denominational and conference work, Black has lived a life of ecumenical partnership, community improvement and equal justice.
Wednesday | SOAR! | Isaiah 40:31
The Rev. Dr. Adam Hamilton is pastor of the The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, KS. The author of more than a dozen books, Hamilton writes about the doubts we all wrestle and the gray areas where life and Scripture intersect. One of his most recent books is Making Sense of the Bible: Rediscovering the Power of Scripture Today.
And those are just the worship preachers! You will be inspired to SOAR! through the five learning track core lectures, subsequent DOC Talks and workshops. Registration is open now and early bird discounts only apply until April 1.

Women and Worship Conference: Finding Our Voices, Expressing Our Visions
By Bettina Lehovec
The gifts and perspectives of women, both laity and clergy, contribute to church renewal through models of fully shared leadership, integration of the arts, creative and just use of language, engagement in hospitality, and care for the world and its people. The Women and Worship Conference slated for Jan. 13-14 at Phillips Theological Seminary in Tulsa offers participants a chance to collaborate in expressing their visions and finding their voices through worship, conversation, creative activities and song.
The conference immediately precedes the Re-Mind/Re-New event and takes advantage of sthe presence of Rev. Dr. Ruth Duck's presence.
Keynote speakers include Duck, Professor of Worship at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, IL.; the Rev. Colleen Kwong, Minister of the Arts at Christ Church (United Church of Christ) in Milwaukee; and Dr. Rebecca Ferguson, a teacher and writer in Milwaukee. Small-group sessions include Feminine Images of God in the Bible, Male Allies for Gender Justice, Women and Seminary, Congregational Emancipatory Language Policies, Intersections with Racial Justice, and Inclusive and Just Language.
