NAPAD celebrates history, ministry Sept. 14-20

Sadly, this past week Harold Johnson, often called the "Father of NAPAD" passed away, just a week before NAPAD Ministry Week.  He initiated the first informal consultation on American Pacific/Asian ministries in 1972 followed by a formal consultation in 1978. He was appointed liaison between Disciples Home Missions and the Asian constituency in 1979. Soon thereafter the General Assembly recognized what was then known as the Asian American Disciples.

David Kagiwada Memorial Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of September and NAPAD Ministry Week following week. This year it falls on Sept.14 and NAPAD Ministry Week from Sept. 14 to 20. Kagiwada was one of the early leaders among North American Pacific/Asian Disciples that came through the Disciples Divinity House at the University of Chicago.Find out more about NAPAD

Texas duc(k)s experiment

Disciples churches in the Fort Worth/Arlington area are working together to get quacking, er, cracking on a new effort to support college students while they are in the area. Disciples Uniting for College Students (DUCS) are looking to create a database of students who might be attending college in the area and then sharing that info with local churches so they can reach out to the students. This initial effort is for students attending school in Fort Worth, Arlington, Weatherford, Waco and Wichita Falls. The churches kicked off the school year with a picnic at the Trinity Park duck pond (imagine that!) that featured food (of course), a bocce tournament and yard darts.

"We are hoping that this might serve as a model for other clusters of Disciples churches near colleges," said Rev. Rob Morris of Ridglea Christian Church. If you want to collaborate or consider instituting a similar effort, contact rob@ridgleachristian.org

Region takes training, conversations outside

At the invitation of the Leader Development Commission of Partnership Ministries, DOC and UCC congregations in Montana and Northern Wyoming will gather in public spaces this fall so they can experience being church outside the building.  At these Fall Harvest Tables held in various locations, a no-host meal will be followed by stories from churches who have moved their ministry from the sanctuary to the public square.  Then, congregations will be given tools to help them assess needs and resources in their own communities. Ron Greene, Leader Development chair says, "Just show up, order your food, and then watch for Jesus to join us at table!"
