The Marin IONS Community Group

by Pat Palmer, Leader

The Marin IONS Community Group was birthed at the 2013 IONS Holiday Open House, when I talked with Cathy Coleman and discovered that there was no group in Marin. I had thought we didn't need one, since we are blessed to be so close to the main campus (about 20 miles, if that.) However, as we talked, I realized that if we had local speakers and discussion groups, right in central Marin, it would enable many more people to know about IONS and noetic sciences.

Our first invitation was sent to IONS' Marin County members calling for interest in starting a group. Five of us gathered in a centrally located coffee shop to talk, and we were off and running!  We met several times and gradually made some good decisions. We offer two events a month, one a speaker/discussion presentation by an outside speaker, and the other a monthly Gnosis gathering at which structured, in-depth discussion about a given topic has become a vehicle for getting to know ourselves and each other in a greater way.

I continue to monitor everything and help with speaker arrangements; others share in welcoming, handling the finances, dealing with the sound equipment, and providing water and/or tea. We usually have between 20 and 50 attendees and have 190 members now who receive email invitations to the events.

I believe I can speak for all of us if I say that the Marin Community Group continues to be a totally positive experience. I always learn something, very much enjoy the people who attend, and get a kick out of meeting these icons of consciousness-raising, right here in our own area.  It's all good!
