Unitarian Universalist churches across the nation have supported Black Lives Matter as an expression of the Standing on the Side of Love goal as well as of UU principles. If we are to support the NAACP in Amarillo, perhaps we need a banner similar to the one shown here that we can march behind in the annual Martin Luther King, Jr., parade and perhaps display on the fence outside the church building. This banner was borrowed (with some alterations) from a UUA website photo.

May 29, 2016
Rev. Addae speaks on The Impulse to Care. To care means to feel compassion. Compassion is to feel what it's like to be in another's skin. Can you feel what it's like to be homeless; or a frightened, suicidal teenager; or a drug addicted head of household? The path is available to us; will you take it?

June 5, 2016
Rev. Addae speaks on Eternal Verities. In the business of our contemporary lives, we are faced with so many distractions that we are often pulled away from focused awareness of the needs of the spiritual heart. Unfortunately we tend to overlook the great vision and eternal verity that while we may have profound differences, every person's hunger is the same.

Rami Shapiro, Perennial Wisdom for the Spiritually Independent (2013).
A recent Pew Research Center survey on American religious life records that "one-fifth of the US public-and a third of adults under thirty-are religiously unaffiliated today, the highest percentages ever in Pew Research Center polling." These Shapiro calls spiritually independent, though they often mark the box labeled "None" when asked their religious affiliation. This book weaves sacred texts and teachings from the world's major religions-Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and more-into a coherent exploration of five core questions at the heart of every religion's search: Who am I? Where did I come from? Where am I going? How shall I live? Why? Shapiro combines these texts with modern commentary designed to help readers apply these texts in their daily lives. His goal is not to draw the reader "into a fixed wisdom tradition, but to draw out of you wisdom that surpasses all tradition."

FireSongs Songwriter Series
Wednesday, May 25, 6:30-8:30 PM
FireSongs Songwriter Series is a new, weekly series that is unique in Amarillo, in that each Wednesday night, a different area songwriter or combo will perform entirely original material---no covers. We have a wealth of creative energy here in the Panhandle and this series aims to celebrate those who express this energy through songwriting.
The shows are at Fire Slice Pizzeria (7301 SW 34th Space 10, Summit Shopping Center) on Wednesdays from 6:30 - 8:30 PM. It's a listening environment, so talking is discouraged in the concert room while the show is going on, but this makes it a much nicer environment, and of course Fire Slice has wonderful food which may be enjoyed throughout the show. There is no cover, but reservations are suggested to guarantee seating in the listening room. Call (806) 331-2232. The artist performing May 25 is Susan Gibson. The next performance, June 1, is by Ronny Dean Garrett.
