Harvest the Power
Final 2015 session
Saturday, October 31, 9 AM - 12 PM (NOON)

Although we are always developing leaders, October is Amarillo Unitarian Universalist's month of intentional leadership development. We do this by employing the Association of Congregations' Tapestry of Faith's program for leadership,  Harvest the Power. This program was created not only for those who have accepted a leadership role in our congregation, but to provide intentional faith development that can be modeled in our congregation. We also encourage participation by those who are interested in learning more about Unitarian Universalism and might want in the future to take a leadership role. All adults are welcome to participate. Teens should inquire.

It is not necessary to have attended last year's training or any of this month's previous sessions to attend this week. We have scheduled the sessions so you can come in the morning - 9 a.m. to noon - and have the rest of the day for your usual Saturday activities.

Oct. 31 - Imagination and Creativity. Inclusivity brings in more voices. More voices bring more ideas and greater creativity. Learning to listen. Asking the right questions. Mattering and marginality. Led by Larry Campbell, Bruce Fielder, and Mary Kay Wells.

Leadership development committee is Larry Campbell, Nina Stein, and Donna Moseley. Please contact us with your questions.

Children's Religious Education (CRE) Halloween Party
Saturday, October 31 from 2-4 PM

The AUUF CRE team is hosting a Halloween Party. The main event will be a super fun scavenger hunt that involves searching for magical items to break curses! There will also be Halloween themed snacks, pumpkin painting (or carving for the truly adventurous), and face painting. If the children's attention spans allow it, I will also explain some things about the origins of Halloween and Halloween traditions.

If you are interested in helping out, I could use help with the set up, the clean up, refereeing and supervising the scavenger hunt, painting faces and/or pumpkins, AND I would really like to have one special volunteer dress up as the ghost of a witch for the scavenger hunt! If you are interested in that role, ask me more questions and I'll give you more answers.

If you're interested in helping out at all, let me know! OH, and if any "big kids" or young at heart would like to give the scavenger hunt a run through about noon so that we can work out any kinks, show up early and/or let me know!

Women's Covenant Group
Monday, November 2, 6 - 7:30 PM

The Women's Covenant Group will be watching and discussing Eve Ensler's film What I Want My Words To Do To You. It offers an unprecedented look into the minds and hearts of the women inmates of New York's Bedford Hills Correctional Facility.

The film goes inside a writing workshop led by playwright Eve Ensler, consisting of 15 women, most of them convicted of murder. Through a series of exercises and discussions, the women, including former Weather Underground members Kathy Boudin and Judith Clark, delve into and expose their most terrifying realities as they grapple with the nature of their crimes and their own culpability. The film culminates in an emotionally charged prison performance of the women's writing by acclaimed actors Mary Alice, Glenn Close, Hazelle Goodman, Rosie Perez and Marisa Tomei. A PBS Program Club selection.

UUA Southern Fall Conference - Glen Rose, Texas
Fall Conference is scheduled for November 13 through 15 at Glen Lake Camp and Conference Center near Glen Rose, Texas. The theme for this conference is "Into the FUUture!" Let's all register before October 26 (for discount) to boldly go where no UU congregation has gone before to gain tools and resources for charging ahead into the coming year, the next 10 years, or the next 10 decades. There are five tracks each designed to help leaders effect real cultural change toward growing a vital, healthy, effective UU community that helps its members achieve our vision of a world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all. Click here for more information. Contact Nina Stein to coordinate transportation and off site room sharing.
Fiction Book Group
Tuesday, November 17 - 7- 8:30 PM
at the Fellowship
November's selection: A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki -  In Ozeki's cleverly structured 2013 novel, a Canadian novelist becomes obsessed with a diary discovered in flotsam washed ashore from Japan.  Her attempts to discover the writer and perhaps to save her life produce a magical journey into the past.  A Booker Prize finalist.

The Fiction Book Group meets on the 3rd Tuesday of every month at the Fellowship to discuss a new novel or collection of essays chosen by retired English professor Dick Moseley, who also facilitates the conversation.  All are welcome to attend, read the month's selection, and enjoy delving deeper into some of today's best new literature.

Fellowship Game Night
Friday, November 20 - 6:30 PM
Mark your calendar now!
"Sociable" UUs will gather between 6:15 and 6:30 p.m., bringing ingredients for Mexican pile-on, and begin eating around 6:30. When the meal is over, probably around 7 or so, we'll play games until around 9:30 or 10. If you have a favorite game, bring it to share. We'll post on the bulletin board by the kitchen a signup sheet for the dinner ingredients. If you prefer to come for just the meal or just the games, of course you're welcome. We hope to have a lively group to share in the festivities.

(For those with young kids, let's just include them in the fun rather than arrange for a nursery. There'll be games easy enough for them to play, with a little adult guidance. Some grandparent-types have already volunteered.)

Read and Learn
Venessa Rush Southern. Miles of Dream (2015).

A beloved Unitarian Universalist tradition dating back to the early 19th C., "meditation manuals," as they have been called since 1961, have offered reflections on how to live, worship, question, learn, grow, and deepen in spirit. Miles of Dream is the first book published under the InSpirit series title.

This collection of twenty-three brief meditations stirs up recollections of similar life experiences for readers from many walks of life. Their universal, human insights uplift and inspire.
