Why peanut butter & Pop-Tarts?
Pop-Tarts are a sweet treat the program can justify putting in the bag - as long as they do not use donors' precious cash gifts to purchase them. They are obtained exclusively through food drives such as ours.
As for peanut butter, it is very expensive but remains a vital part of SnackPak bags during longer weekends and holidays. Calorie-for-calorie, peanut butter is a nutritionally dense food filled with protein, fiber, and heart-healthy monounsaturated fat. Plus, kids love it. More information
Please make the change and bring peanut butter & PopTarts! Until everyone is aware of the change, all other items will be donated to the High Plains Food Bank. Note: Our donations will now go to the program here in Amarillo. Because our Fellowship no longer has a member who works in Hereford, it has become difficult regularly to transport the food we've been bringing to that community. Yvonne Moore, Social Action Chair, contacted the Hereford program to see if it would create a shortage there if we donated food to a different SnackPak4Kids program - and they responded that it would not create any difficulty. All four Saturdays in October (Oct. 4, 11, 18, & 25) 9:30 AM - 11:30 AM
Every Saturday morning in October, the Leadership Development Committee will host a series of brief workshops intended to prepare members for serving our Fellowship in Board or committee positions. Everyone is invited to participate as often as possible in these Saturday workshops.
This Saturday (Oct. 4) from 9:30 - 11:30 AM:
Leadership Journey
A phrase often used in twelve-step programs perhaps best describes our concept of leadership:
Our leaders are but trusted servants; they do not govern. We are all trusted servants of our congregation, whether we are serving on the Board of Directors or getting the pot luck lunch on the table and cleaned up afterward. Whatever we do for and with each other is service, as is reflected in the words from our Sunday morning opening affirmation,
"...and service is (our) prayer."
The workshops are part of the Tapestry of Faith curriculum from the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA); specifically, they are from a leadership development program called Harvest the Power. This is the first year of a series which we plan to complete in three years. Together, they provide a chance for us to know ourselves, each other, and the UU religious tradition better.
Other workshops this year: - Workshop 2 - October 11
Unitarian Universalist Journey - Workshop 3 - October 18
Power and Authority - Workshop 4 - October 25
Turning Points and Moments of Grace
Workshops will be facilitated by a number of different talented, skilled and charming members of our congregation and our leadership development committee, along with our minister for two of the workshops. Whether you can come to all or only one, your presence is needed, wanted, and appreciated! We will enjoy these because we enjoy each other and our shared faith. Snacks will be provided during each 2-hour workshop. Join us for this adventure - you will love it! Contacts: Nina Stein or Minnie Venable

Help the Hungry and Homeless
|
Thank you to all who "opened their hearts" and participated in the annual AUUF Beans & Cornbread Supper last Monday! The supper, hosted by our Social Action Committee, was only one of the ways in which we all have a chance to give financial support to our Fellowship's involvement in the Interfaith Coalition for Hunger (part of the Amarillo Coalition for Homelessness). Raffle! We still have 6 seats for the citywide Beans & Cornbread Luncheon to be held at the Civic Center on Monday, October 20. During potluck this Sunday, the Social Action Committee will have a raffle for these 6 tickets Each raffle ticket is a minimum of $5.00 - or 3 tickets for $10.00. Megan Schwartz will be doing the raffle during the potluck on the 5th. Contribute
Also, we will continue to accept donations. All contributions are tax-deductible.
- Checks should be made payable to AUUF, with "Beans & Cornbread" in the memo line.
- Cash contributions should be made in one of the Beans & Cornbread special contribution envelopes. Be sure to write your name on the envelope!
Why Social Action? Through Social Action work we put into practice the first 2 of the 7 Principles of Unitarian Universalism, in which we affirm and promote: - The inherent worth and dignity of every person; and
- Justice, equity, and compassion in human relations.

We had a great meeting Saturday, setting both long and short-term goals for the children's RE program. A sampling of them includes dividing the children more appropriately by age, parties, projects, music programs, utilizing youth in the worship service, and providing programs for young adults. We will begin by having an All Hallows Day Party at the Fellowship on November 1. Watch for details including a time. Also, by next Sunday, we hope to divide the six to twelve-year-olds into two groups. Thanks to Adam Jenkins, we plan to be much more active on social media, so check our Facebook page ( AUUF Children's RE News).
This Sunday, October 5, our lesson is on respect for and friendship with people who are not like us.
Parents: Be sure Vicki Schoen has your current email.

Unitarian Universalism: The Flaming Chalice
Today, the flaming chalice is the official symbol of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee and the Unitarian Universalist Association. Officially or unofficially, it functions as a logo for hundreds of congregations. Perhaps most importantly, it has become a focal point for worship. No one meaning or interpretation is official. The flaming chalice, like our faith, stands open to receive new truths that pass the tests of reason, justice, and compassion. From The Flaming Chalice by Dan Hotchkiss
