What Is DACA? "On June 15, 2012, the Secretary of Homeland Security announced that certain people who came to the United States as children and meet several guidelines may request consideration of deferred action for a period of two years, subject to renewal. They are also eligible for work authorization. Deferred action is a use of prosecutorial discretion to defer removal action against an individual for a certain period of time."

SnackPak4Kids Update

Peanut Butter & PopTarts for Amarillo kids!

Our donations will now go to the program here in Amarillo. Because our Fellowship no longer has a member who works in Hereford, it has become difficult regularly to transport the food we've been bringing to that community.

Yvonne Moore, Social Action Chair, contacted the Hereford program to see if it would create a shortage there if we donated food to a different SnackPak4Kids program - and they responded that it would not create any difficulty.

Peanut Butter & Pop-Tarts

Why peanut butter & Pop-Tarts?

Pop-Tarts are a sweet treat the program can justify putting in the bag - as long as they do not use donors' precious cash resources to purchase them. They are obtained exclusively through food drives such as ours.

As for peanut butter, it is very expensive but remains a vital part of SnackPak bags during longer weekends and holidays. Calorie-for-calorie, peanut butter is a nutritionally dense food filled with protein, fiber, and heart-healthy monounsaturated fat. Plus, kids love it. More information

So - instead of the other high-protein items we have been bringing, please switch to peanut butter & PopTarts! Until everyone is aware of the change, all other items will be donated to the High Plains Food Bank.

Children's RE Update
From Vicki Schoen:

Sunday, September 28,
we will be talking about the feelings of others. These are the goals for the lesson:
  • to gain greater awareness of the feelings and inner experiences of other people;
  • to explore ways of responding to the feelings and experiences of other people.

We are actively preparing to begin a class for pre-teens separate from the lower elementary students. If you have suggestions, please tell Vicki Schoen or Sarah Brown.
AUUF Annual Beans & Cornbread SUPPER
Monday, September 29 at 6:30 PM

What will you bring - beans, cornbread, chili, or stew?

The AUUF Annual Bean & Cornbread Supper is hosted by our Social Action Committee. Through Social Action work we put into practice the first 2 of the 7 Principles of Unitarian Universalism, in which we affirm and promote:

  1. The inherent worth and dignity of every person; and
  2. Justice, equity, and compassion in human relations.
This supper allows us all a chance to give financial support to our Fellowship's involvement in the Interfaith Coalition for Hunger (part of the Amarillo Coalition for Homelessness). Everyone is encouraged to participate, even if you are unable to attend the citywide luncheon on October 20. And what Unitarian Universalist can pass up a potluck?

All proceeds will be contributed toward funds raised to feed the homeless at the citywide Beans & Cornbread Luncheon, to be held at the Civic Center. The luncheon is the primary fundraiser for the Amarillo Coalition for Homelessness.

Join us and bring something to share - including your generous contribution by cash or check. Contributions are tax-deductible.
  • Checks should be made payable to AUUF, with "Beans & Cornbread" in the memo line.
  • Cash contributions should be made in one of the Beans & Cornbread special contribution envelopes. Be sure to write your name on the envelope!
Your contribution of $30 or more also allows you to purchase a seat at one of the three AUUF tables at the citywide luncheon. Please indicate that you wish a seat when writing your check or completing the envelope.

Let's have a great turnout for both events!

Hone your Leadership Skills
All four Saturdays
in October
(Oct. 4, 11, 18, & 25)
9:30 AM - 11:30 AM

On Saturday mornings in October, the Leadership Development Committee will host a series of brief workshops intended to prepare members for serving our Fellowship in Board or committee positions. Everyone is invited to participate as often as possible in these Saturday workshops.

The workshops are part of the Tapestry of Faith curriculum from the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA); specifically, they are from a leadership development program called Harvest the Power. This is the first year of a series which we plan to complete in three years. Together, they provide a chance for us to know ourselves, each other, and the UU religious tradition better.

This year's schedule:

  • Workshop 1- October 4
    Leadership Journey
  • Workshop 2 - October 11
    Unitarian Universalist Journey
  • Workshop 3 - October 18
    Power and Authority
  • Workshop 4 - October 25
Turning Points and Moments of Grace

Workshops will be facilitated by a number of different talented, skilled and charming members of our congregation and our leadership development committee, along with our minister for two of the workshops.

Whether you can come to all or only one, your presence is needed, wanted, and appreciated!  We will enjoy these because we enjoy each other and our shared faith.  Snacks will be provided during each 2-hour workshop.

Join us for this adventure - you will love it!
