Fiction Book Group
Thursday, Sept 23 from 7 - 8:30 PM

This month, the fiction book group discusses
The Interestings, by
Meg Wolitzer.

Wolitzer's novel offers a fresh take on the theme of self-invention, with a heroine who asks herself whether the ambitious men and women in her circle have inaccurately defined success.

Children's RE Update
From Vicki Schoen:
Sunday, September 21,
we will be talking about friendship. These are the goals for the lesson:
  • to explore the meaning of friend and enemy and to enlarge awareness of these concepts
  • * to explore how it feels to be a friend, to have a friend, to be an enemy, to have an enemy
We are actively preparing to begin a class for pre-teens separate from the lower elementary students. If you have suggestions, please tell Vicki Schoen or Sarah Brown.
PARENTS!
Reminder: Goal-setting workshop
Saturday, September 27
9 to 11
AM

Children's Religious Education (CRE) encourages you to help us set and plan how to achieve our goals in the coming months.

If you have teenagers or pre-teens, we are especially interested in your input. That age group is getting larger as our Fellowship grows, and we want to create a program just for them.

Hone your Leadership Skills

All four Saturdays
in October
(Oct. 4, 11, 18, & 25)
9:30 AM - 11:30 AM

On Saturday mornings in October, the Leadership Development Committee will host a series of brief workshops intended to prepare members for serving our Fellowship in Board or committee positions. Everyone is invited to participate as often as possible in these Saturday workshops.

Most of the work of our Fellowship is done by volunteer members and friends - our congregation is not yet large enough to hire staff to do all of it!

  • Some of that work is pure fun
  • Some of it is heavy labor
  • All of it is shared with others of our congregation and brings us closer to each other and to our shared values (and contributes to the happiness
of all of us, says the research!)

The workshops are part of the Tapestry of Faith curriculum from the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA); specifically, they are from a leadership development program called Harvest the Power. This is the first year of a series which we plan to complete in three years. Together, they provide a chance for us to know ourselves, each other, and the UU religious tradition better.

This year's schedule:

  • Workshop 1
    - October 4
    Leadership Journey
  • Workshop 2 - October 11
    Unitarian Universalist Journey
  • Workshop 3
    - October 18
    Power and AuthorityWorkshop 4 - October 25
Turning Points and Moments of Grace

Workshops will be facilitated by a number of different talented, skilled and charming members of our congregation and our leadership development committee, along with our minister for two of the workshops.

Whether you can come to all or only one, your presence is needed, wanted, and appreciated!  We will enjoy these because we enjoy each other and our shared faith.  Snacks will be provided during each 2-hour workshop.

Join us for this adventure - you will love it!

AUUF Annual Beans & Cornbread SUPPER
Monday, September 29 at 6:30 PM

Did you know that

September is Hunger Awareness Month?

In support of our Fellowship's involvement in the Interfaith Coalition for Hunger (part of the Amarillo Coalition for Homelessness), AUUF will host our very own annual Beans & Cornbread Supper! There are two purposes for this supper: (1) To remind us that, for some, beans & cornbread provide needed sustenance; (2) To raise money for the Amarillo Coalition for Homelessness through the annual citywide luncheon.

Start planning your pot of beans, chili, or stew - or pan of cornbread - now. As you may surmise, it will be a potluck. Check the "Events" pages for more details. The supper is part of our Social Action work, putting into practice the first two of the 7 Principles of Unitarian Universalism, which we affirm and promote:

  1. The inherent worth and dignity of every person;
  2. Justice, equity, and compassion in human relations

All proceeds will be contributed toward funds raised to feed the homeless at the citywide Beans & Cornbread Luncheon , which will be held at the Civic Center on October 20.

To dwell together in peace,
To seek the truth in love,
And to help one another.
