Great Decisions
Discussion Group
Tuesday, May 6 7 - 8:30 PM
The topic for this meeting is Energy Independence. Energy independence, by taking the bargaining chip of oil dependence off the table, would be good for American foreign policy. But the very technological advances that make independence possible have created a dilemma for lawmakers. In a government with fixed resources, should the U.S. encourage more traditional fuel production or invest in the young technology of renewable resources?
There will be a 30 minute interview aired by PBS shown prior to our discussion. Great Decisions is America's largest discussion program on world affairs.

Communion at AUUF and Living the Questions Group
|
Thursday, May 8
Communion - 6:30 PM Living the Questions at 7 PM All are welcome to join either or both gatherings. During Communion, we gather for music, hear a scripture reading, share joys and concerns, offer prayer, and partake of the Communion elements. The brief service concludes with a prayer and a traditional passing of the peace. Living the Questions is about rethinking old theological ideas that are not helpful in the 21st century. Designed for those seeking insight on contemporary progressive Christian thought, this month's discussion will be about intimacy with God / prayer. Contact: Lyle Raker

UUA Common Read:
Behind the Kitchen Door
|
|
Tues., May 13
7 - 8:30 PM
The book for this year's Common Read is Behind the Kitchen Door by Saru Jayaraman. The author invites us as Unitarian Universalists to intentionally consider our practices in restaurant dining. It makes visible the lives of people who are subject to discrimination and oppression based on economic status, race, ethnicity, gender and/or immigration status. Come to the Common Read discussion, where we will be encouraged to discuss the book and let Behind the Kitchen Door inspire follow-up action, such as advocacy for just working conditions for restaurant workers as part of a commitment to ethical eating. Our discussion will be facilitated by Wendy Hearn. |

The 7 Principles of Unitarian Universalism
2nd Principle: Justice, equity, and compassion in human relations.
"Justice, equity, and compassion in human relations points us toward something beyond inherent worth and dignity. It points us to the larger community. It gets at collective responsibility. It reminds us that treating people as human beings is not simply something we do one-on-one, but something that has systemic implications and can inform our entire cultural way of being.
"Compassion is something that we can easily act on individually. We can demonstrate openness, give people respect, and treat people with kindness on our own. But we need one another to achieve equity and justice.
"Justice, equity, and compassion are all part of the same package. Just as the second Principle overlaps with the first, so it is related to the seventh Principle - the interdependent web of all existence."
-Rev. Emily Gage
