Turkey: A nation at a crossroads
Turkey is a bridge between an ever-growing chasm between the East and West. Turkey's first President Kemal Ataturk envisioned a modern, democratic nation-state built on the ashes of the Ottoman Empire with strong ties to Europe, not the Middle East. But as the clashes between secular and religious groups and the recent protests in Taksim Square show, the soul of Turkey is still very much up for grabs.

Great Decisions is America's largest discussion program on world affairs.

The Meaningful and MIssional Life
"What if some UU with a large and largely empty home invited a few people into covenantal community with her, and they all embarked on a life of ministry? What if those folks declared that in the six blocks surrounding that house, no child will be without a place to get a snack and help with homework after school, no elderly person or person living alone will go unnoticed, no trash will blow in the street, no neighbor will lack help to meet the emergencies of life and neighbors would have a place to gather in conversation and celebration?"

Labels on Food from Factory Farms
From the Spring 2014 issue of Fair World Project:
"Today, after decades of consolidation, 95% of our meat, dairy and eggs comes
from industrial "factory farms" or, to use industry lingo, Confined Animal
Feeding Operations (CAFOs).

CAFOs represent a corporate-controlled system characterized by large-scale, centralized, low-profit margin production, processing and distribution systems."

Suddenlink users: Fix available

At last - please help us spread the word!

Suddenlink subscribers: If you received a note this week from submissions@uuamarillo.org which was followed a little later by the newsletter from last Friday (March 7) - then you need do nothing else. Carry on.

However, if the note and/or the newsletter did not get to you, they may have gone to your Spam folder. There is a fairly simple fix that you can make to receive AUUF communications, including the newsletter, in your Inbox. (I assure you, it probably will take longer to read the instructions than to do it!)

The document Suddenlink filter has both written instructions and screenshots - if you have difficulty with any of it, please notify me and give me as much detail as possible about the problem you encountered.

Thanks for your patience as we have tried to work through this problem.

Book Group: And the Mountains Echoed
Thursday, March 25, 2014  7:30 - 8:30 PM

This month's book:
And the Mountains Echoedby Khaled Hosseini. The author of The Kite Runner takes his characters from Kabul all across the world in a generational novel exploring how our choices bear complicated fruit. Like Hosseini's earlier best sellers, The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, the novel explores Afghan history-this time moving across the last sixty years through interlocked stories that spread outward following the separation of two children.  Multiple points of view carry the reader across generations and across the world.

The Book Group
meets monthly (excluding December) at the Fellowship to discuss a new novel or collection of essays chosen by retired English professor Dick Moseley, who also facilitates the conversation. All are welcome to attend, read the month's selection, and enjoy delving deeper into some of today's best new literature.

Contact: Dick Moseley

The final circle dinner, to be hosted by Michelle Ellis and Toni Baker, has to be postponed until the summer. Watch for details as date & time are determined.
