Behind the Kitchen Door by Saru Jayaraman

Every year, the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) invites Common Read participants to read and discuss the same book in a given period of time. Behind the Kitchen Door invites Unitarian Universalists to intentionally consider their practices in restaurant dining. It makes visible the lives of people who are subject to discrimination and oppression based on economic status, race, ethnicity, gender and/or immigration status.

Wendy Hearn will lead this year's discussion.

New logo for UUA
A new logo for the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) is only part of an initiative to help congregations reach out to the millennial generation and others who are unchurched.

The Rev. Dr. Terasa Cooley, the UUA's Program and Strategy Officer, said,
"We want congregations to think about the messages their congregations are sending out to the world that doesn't know anything about them. That includes thinking about how their building looks to guests, the structure of their services, their programs, whether they're inward-oriented or serving the community, and what their online presence is like."

Read the full article from UU World and the announcement about the new logo from Rev. Peter Morales, UUA President.

An evening candlelight service of prayer, meditation, singing and silence.

Margaret Lacy of St. Andrews writes:

"...(D)esigned to help people learn to be still and be receptive to this voice, Taizé is a short meditative service with songs, scripture, prayers, and silence.  It has its roots in monastic times and is very beautiful and powerful because of its simplicity. In the community of Taizé, France, people come from all over the world to experience this quiet and inward meditation within a loving community.

Taizé reaches all ages, to families, and to singles.  But most of all, it touches young adults from all over the world."

GMO OMG:
Is this the end of real food?
From For a Better World, Fall 2013:

When people first hear about just the basic facts concerning Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs or Genetically Engineered Foods) - the DNA of seeds altered with genes from organisms like bacteria so food
crops can withstand herbicides that will kill all other plants, patented by giant chemical companies and found in 80% of processed foods - the standard response is "Oh, my God." For some, it's just an exclamation, but for others, I imagine, it's the beginnings of a prayer. There's a mixture of horror and disbelief, as if finding out we're living inside a very strange sci-fi novel. Beyond that, it's the sting of humiliation from being ignorant about something so big, mixed with the anger that comes from feeling like you've been duped.

Stewardship Campaign: Final days

REMEMBER to turn in your Pledge Card by Sunday, February 23rd

BELIEVE IN GOOD.

Our Fellowship's growth increases our potential to have a positive impact in our community and our region - but also increases our financial requirements. More members generate more expenses, just as more children in a growing household require more resources. As other progressive thinkers in our area discover us, we can welcome them to our Beloved Community and provide all that they expect.

The amount pledged during this Stewardship Campaign will determine what programs and projects can be considered for our next program year (June 1, 2014 - May 31, 2015). Members and friends are stepping up to the plate and have already committed to supporting AUUF with more than $65,000 pledged to date - just over half of the proposed budget.

Members will vote on the proposed budget at the Annual Congregational Meeting on April 6th.

As you consider your annual pledge I hope you'll consider all that the Fellowship means to you and what it can mean to others.

Monthly Book Discussion Group: The Twelve Tribes of Hattie

Tuesday February 25, 2014
7:00 - 8:30 PM

This month's book: The Twelve Tribes of Hattie,
by Ayana Mathis. In this compelling first novel, Mathis explores how the lives of one African-American family unfold across the twentieth century.  Displaced from Georgia, Hattie makes a life in Philadelphia and brings eleven children into this uncertain world. Each chapter of the book moves forward in time with one of Hattie's children as each tries to come to terms with racial heritage and the undercurrents of American racism.

The UU Book Group meets every fourth Tuesday at 7 PM  (excluding December) at the Fellowship to discuss works of contemporary fiction.  All members and friends are welcome.  Whether you've read all of the book, part of the book, or none of the book, the fellowship and commentary will be enjoyable.
