| Transgender Day Of Remembrance |
 SERVICE: Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013 7:30 PM
Metropolitan Community Church (MCC)
2123 Polk St. (map) Writing in 2010, Rev. Paul Langston-Daley said that "Living authentically takes courage, strength, and above all, faith." Wednesday, November 20, 2013 is the National Transgender Day of Remembrance, and will be observed with a community service at MCC. This service provides a time to honor those who have lost their lives for being who they are. This is a growing ceremony that started in 1999 when a few friends of Rita Hester gathered to honor her life and to bring awareness of those who were killed for daring to be themselves.

Thanksgiving Dinner at the Fellowship
|
|
Thursday, November 28, 2013
Meal at 1 PM
Hosting a Thanksgiving Dinner at the Fellowship is a tradition we honor each year. This year, Minnie Venable and Ray Nordhausen will host the Dinner. This event has always been primarily for those members who either do NOT have relatives or close friends in Amarillo or widows/widowers and single members who would like to spend this holiday with others rather than be alone. Other members and friends are welcome to come and bring others to join them. The food and drink are always outstanding, the conversations are witty and intelligent. The Fellowship will provide the turkey and the ham, and each person who attends is asked to sign-up to bring a side dish or drink - or, of course, a dessert. The sign-up sheet is posted on the wall near the kitchen. Be sure to claim your spot on the sign-up list! We ask that you bring enough of your dish to share with at least 4-5 more people than you have in your party.

Welcome to the Amarillo Unitarian Universalist Fellowship! |
 |
Thanks to everyone who completed the AUUF Survey. It will provide our leadership with invaluable insights to guide our long-range planning to identify and address the Fellowship's needs.
As you can see from this week's newsletter, the next few weeks at AUUF will be quite full. We hope that you will participate in some of the many opportunities for learning, fellowship, and involvement with us. We are sure that you can find events that are of interest to you - so we greatly look forward to seeing you.
Share this newsletter by forwarding it to friends that you believe would be interested in our liberal religious community - or pick up printed copies to share.
Be sure to visit our website, uuamarillo.org, to view additional information about Unitarian Universalism, our Fellowship, current news and events, a calendar, and a blog of recent news articles of interest to the liberal religious community. Also find us on Facebook. You don't have to wait until the next newsletter comes out for updates!
With welcoming arms for all,

Sunday Worship
10 AM & 11 AM
Nov. 17, 2013David Green is speaking on Faith and Genetics, discussing how the discovery of the "God Gene" has changed the way we think about why some people are geared toward religious belief while others are not. Nov. 24, 2013AUUF members will share stories of four Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC) workers as part of Guest at Your Table. This year, we are featuring people who have empowered others to realize their human rights. Learn more about our " guests" for 2013. A special offering will be collected in support of UUSC at the services on Nov. 24. Dec. 1, 2013David Green is speaking on The Quest For The Historical Jesus, discussing the recurring efforts - since the 1800s - of scholars to reveal the "real" person known as Jesus of Nazareth.

Lower your taxes
Help AUUF grow
It's no secret that our Fellowship is growing and we love it! The Stewardship Committee wants you to be aware that recent tax law changes once again allow AUUF members and friends who are over 70½ years of age to revisit your IRAs and consider the possibility of donating 'qualified distributions' directly from your IRA to the Fellowship. An end of year IRA donation can lower your tax bill for 2013 and can be the seed money for future growth plans being developed by the Long Range Strategic Planning Committee. Since by law you have to take a distribution, why not consider donating all or part of it to the Fellowship rather than have it add to your income thereby increasing your taxable income and your tax bill? See more details by clicking IRA donation.

Beans & Cornbread Luncheon
|
Monday, Nov. 18 11:30 AM - 2 PM
North Exhibit Hall & Heritage Room (Entrance #3)
Amarillo Civic Center
Thanks to all our fellowship that helped to make the AUUF Beans and Corn Bread dinner a success. The donations from members and the dinner raised $725.00 to help fund the Interfaith Campaign for the Homeless. Our donation will be matched by The Don and Sybil Harrington Foundation, providing a total of $1450 to help feed the homeless in Amarillo.
We encourage as many of our members as possible to attend the city-wide Beans and Corn Bread Luncheon. This will be an occasion for members of our Fellowship to show our support of social action in Amarillo. Good food will be served, and William C. Moyers, author of New York Times bestselling memoir Broken: My Story of Addiction and Redemption, will be the featured speaker. His latest book is Now What? An Insider's Guide to Addiction and Recovery. Moyers also writes a weekly online column, Beyond Addiction.
You may still donate to this important effort through the AUUF Office. Make your check payable to AUUF with the notation "Beans & Cornbread."

Book Group: Dear Life
|
Tuesday Nov. 26, 2013 - 7 PM
This month's book: Dear Life by Alice Munro.
This is the latest (and probably the last) short story collection of Alice Munroe. The Canadian author, who received this year's Nobel Prize for Literature, is generally considered one of the finest short story writers of her generation. The Times article announcing the award has a good summation of her career and reputation.
Linda Cook will moderate the November meeting at 7:00 p.m. at the Fellowship.
The UU book group meets on most fourth Tuesdays, but will recess until January, when the book for discussion will be Christopher Moore's satiric take on King Lear, titled Fool.
