Chalice Lighters Challenge

Goal: That 25% of the AUUF membership be signed up for the Chalice Lighter Program .

Reason: In becoming a Chalice Lighter, you will signal your willingness to contribute $10 or more up to three times a year to help a congregation in our district complete a special project linked to growth. It is important that we become a Chalice Lighter Congregation. As we look toward the future, having this designation would qualify us to apply for a grant to help with the costs of expansion. Such grants are awarded 3 times per year. A call for donations goes out prior to each grant award; with each call every Chalice Lighter contributes $10 or more. The pooled money becomes the grant to an individual congregation. The most recent grant was to the UU Church of Bartlesville, OK.

Response:  "We're almost there," says Eric Berg, Immediate Past President. "Jump on the wagon and we'll be there." As best we can tell, we're at least halfway to our goal. According to Eric, "Many members have told me they have already signed up.  Many more have indicated they were going to sign up."  That's great! But he also stated that, "It's been a little hard to keep an accurate list because members tell me 'in passing' during Sunday services."

Action (there is one for everyone!):

  1. If you have signed up:
Inform Eric by email  - even if you told him verbally already.
  2. If you have not yet signed up
to be a Chalice Lighter, you may use the  secure online pledge form or call the office at 805.355.9351 to request that a printed copy be mailed to you. Once you've signed up, tell Eric by email
Note: The form has a question for "District" - AUUF is part of the Southwestern UU Conference (SWUUC).

Let's recycle the cups!

Those new "ecotainer" coffee cups?

For our recycling ease, there is a green recycle bin right next to the regular trash can in the coffee room. These biodegradable hot beverage cups use a corn-based lining instead of petroleum-based plastic and are made with fiber from sustainably harvested wood. They are compostable, and will be recycled - but only if we put them in the right bin!

Book Group: The Tenth of December

Tuesday September 24, 2013
7 PM - 8:30 PM

This month's book:
Tenth of December
,
     by George Saunders

George Saunders is an Amarillo native who teaches creative writing at Syracuse University. He received a MacArthur Genius Grant, is a frequent contributor to the New Yorker, and recently gave the convocation address at Syracuse that went viral. His speech, which has a strong UU message, can be read on The New York Times.

The UU book group meets every fourth Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. to discuss works of contemporary fiction.  The book for October is The Secret Keeper by Kate Morton, and the book for November is Dear Life by Alice Munroe. Anyone interested in spirited discussion is invited (even if you haven't finished the book).

The selections for the Book Group are made by retired English professor Dick Moseley, who also facilitates the conversation. All are welcome to attend, read the month's selection, and enjoy delving deeper into some of today's best new literature.

HIspanic Heritage Month
Let's celebrate the rich heritage of Hispanic and Latino Americans!

National Hispanic Heritage month is September 15-October 15 in the United States, a month when people recognize the contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans to the United states and celebrate the group's heritage and culture.

The Heritage month was approved by President Lyndon Johnson  and the length of it expanded by Presidency Ronald Reagan in 1968 to cover a 30 day period. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1968.

September 15 was chosen as the starting point for the celebration because it is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.  They all declared independence in 1821.  In addition, Mexico, Chile and Belize celebrate their independence day on September 16,18, and 21, respectively.

Feed Hungry Kids in Hereford

There are approximately 1700 food-insecure children in Deaf Smith County - where Hereford is the county seat. As part of Hunger Action Month, we plan to continue supporting the needs of the children of Hereford through the SNACK PAK 4KIDS program. AUUF has partnered with the Hereford program since April 2009.

The mission of SNACK PAK 4KIDS  is to end weekend hunger for children living in the Texas Panhandle. This is done by providing a backpack filled with kid-friendly snacks each Friday of the school year.

How can you contribute to this effort? Bring 7-7.5 ounce cans (pop-top lids only, please!) of high-protein foods(such as Vienna sausage, lasagna, spaghetti, and stew)
when you come to the Fellowship on Sunday--or bring them by the Fellowship at 4901 Cornell during office hours, which are M-W-F 9 AM - noon.
A work in progress:
AUUF and the Arts Calendar

Are you a member or friend of the Fellowship who is in the arts?
We want to support you! If you have upcoming events you would like us to include on our upcoming "AUUF & the Arts" calendar, please send that information to submissions@uuamarillo.org

We will list public gigs, showings, exhibits, and performances by people who are actively involved with the Fellowship.  We will also include events in the arts in which our members and friends play active planning roles (such as being on the Board of the sponsoring organization).

The AUUF & the Arts calendar will be a supplement to the main calendar which lists AUUF events. The AUUF calendar will continue to be found in its usual location (or by clicking on the mini-calendar in the left column of this newsletter). We expect the secondary calendar to be a menu choice under "News and Events." (But please share your better idea.)

We hope that you will enjoy this addition to uuamarillo.org
