Update: Chalice Lighters
Several AUUF members have already signed up for the Chalice Lighter program. Are you among them?

If you have signed up

-- please let Eric Berg know that you've already signed up. We need at least 20% of our membership to be Chalice Lighters to qualify as as a Chalice Lighter Congregation, and being able to document this is essential.

If you have not yet signed up
--we urge you to become a Chalice Lighter. In so doing, you will signal your willingness to contribute $10 or more up to three times a year to help a congregation in our district (Southwestern UU Conference, or SWUUC) complete a special project linked to growth.

A call for donations goes out 3 times a year, and each Chalice Lighter contributes $10 or more. The pooled money becomes a grant to a growing congregation. Grants are available only to Chalice Lighter Congregations.

Follow this link for more information about our district's Chalice LIghter program, recent grants, and to complete your secure online pledge form. If you prefer to mail your form, you may print a copy from the same website, pick one up from the AUUF office (M - W- F; 9 AM to noon), or call 806.355.9351 to request that a form be mailed to you.
Still wondering about those new coffee cups?

For a number of years the Fellowship has exclusively brewed Equal Exchange fair trade coffee, and provided ceramic coffee mugs (donated by members) for serving. Every Sunday following our services - or after any event when coffee is served - coffee carafes, pump-dispensers, and several dozen mugs are washed by a volunteer from the Membership Committee. On occasional Sundays with higher than average attendance (an increasing phenomenon) we have run out of clean mugs!

As an experiment in water conservation, we will begin using 12-ounce paper cups starting Sunday, Sept. 8.

Provided by Equal Exchange, these biodegradable hot beverage cups use a corn-based lining instead of petroleum-based plastic and are made with fiber from sustainably harvested wood. They are compostable, and will be recycled along with our other used paper products.

Our hope is AUUF members and guests will enjoy using these "ecotainer" cups, and by eliminating the need to wash so many mugs, we will help do our part in conserving precious water.

However, your feedback is important. Please direct any comments or questions regarding our use of biodegradable paper cups to Cathy Proctor at office@uuamarillo.org

Welcome to the Amarillo Unitarian
Universalist Fellowship!

Unitarian Universalism is a non-creedal religion, of a "faith without a creed." People from all cultures, religious backgrounds, sexual orientations, gender identities, and lifestyles are embraced in their personal pursuit of religious truth. We celebrate the richness that comes from our diversity.

In this issue you'll find news and events of the upcoming weeks. We invite you to share our newsletter by forwarding it to friends or picking up a printed copy on Sunday to give to a friend who does not have internet access.

Be sure to visit our website, uuamarillo.org, to view additional information about Unitarian Universalism, our Fellowship, current news and events - you don't have to wait until the next newsletter comes out for updates - a calendar, and a blog of recent news articles of interest to the liberal religious community. Also find us on Facebook.

With welcoming arms for all,

Each informal gathering is led by David Green and includes sharing by long-term AUUF members. Unitarian Universalist history, beliefs, and practices are discussed, as well as AUUF history, structure, and expectations of membership.

Work Party! AUUF "Garden Guild"
TOMORROW!
Saturday, September 14

starts at 8 AM
(while it's cooler!)

This work party is for all who are interested in creating an inviting landscape for the Fellowship grounds as an outward reflection of our welcoming community.

Deb Winters, Chair of the Aesthetics Committee, has prepared a potential layout and there is much need for input into the project - AND putting the plan into action. The first tasks will be removing Bermuda grass and misplaced plants from around the courtyard, as well as laying down mulch to give us a head start on spring.

Take part in making AUUF beautiful! There is no need to make a reservation, just show up in the courtyard ready to hep in any way that you can.

Acclaimed Celtic fingerstyle guitarist Jerry Barlow is a virtuoso musician, a warm and accessible performer, and a world-class storyteller. His repertoire is composed of a synthesis of traditional music from the British Isles and his own original Celtic-inspired compositions.

Music from Jerry's first CD Keepsake is played on NPR stations across the country and was used in a PBS documentary "Songs of our Children.  The title track of his second CD, Bring Down The Storm, won an Indie Project Award for "Best Songs of 2006."  His latest CD, Fields and Fences, was released in October 2011.

Thanks, HPPR, for bringing Jerry back to Amarillo! If you would like to make a reservation for this show, call HPPR at 806.367.9088 or send an e-mail to music@hppr.org

Remember Hunger Action Month

As you recall, September is Hunger Action Month --  a 30-day effort in which everyone can be a part of the solution to end hunger nationwide. See the Hunger Action Month website for many ways you can help. In addition, remember that our Fellowship has long supported the children of Hereford through the SNACK PAK 4 KIDS program which ensures that children there do not go hungry over the weekend. This year the program has received several grants which provide peanut butter as well as many of the other items we used to bring.

The children's need now is for high-protein foods in 7 - 7.5 ounce cans with pop-top lids. Foods such as Vienna sausage, lasagna, spaghetti, and stew are in great need. The size of the can does matter! Larger cans crush the other items in the backpacks and become too heavy for young children to carry home on Fridays.

Please bring your items to the Fellowship when you come on Sunday--or bring them by the Fellowship at 4901 Cornell during office hours, which are M-W-F 9 AM - noon.

AUUF and the Arts Calendar

During the next few weeks, we plan to have a second calendar on the website. This will be a supplement - the main calendar listing AUUF events will still be found in its usual location.

We want to support our members and friends who are in various arts. On the "AUUF and the Arts" we will list public gigs, showings, exhibits, and performances by people who are actively involved with the Fellowship. This secondary calendar will probably be a menu choice under "News and Events." (But please share your better idea.) If you have upcoming events to include, please send that information to submissions@uuamarillo.org

We hope that you will enjoy this addition to uuamarillo.org
