For a number of years the Fellowship has exclusively brewed Equal Exchange fair trade coffee, and provided ceramic coffee mugs (donated by members) for serving. Every Sunday following our services - or after any event when coffee is served - coffee carafes, pump-dispensers, and several dozen mugs are washed by a volunteer from the Membership Committee. On occasional Sundays with higher than average attendance (an increasing phenomenon) we have run out of clean mugs!
As an experiment in water conservation, we will begin using 12-ounce paper cups starting Sunday, Sept. 8.
Provided by Equal Exchange, these biodegradable hot beverage cups use a corn-based lining instead of petroleum-based plastic and are made with fiber from sustainably harvested wood. They are compostable, and will be recycled along with our other used paper products.
Our hope is AUUF members and guests will enjoy using these "ecotainer" cups, and by eliminating the need to wash so many mugs, we will help do our part in conserving precious water.
However, your feedback is important. Please direct any comments or questions regarding our use of biodegradable paper cups to Cathy Proctor at office@uuamarillo.org

Welcome to the Amarillo Unitarian Universalist Fellowship! |
 |
|
Events at the Fellowship continue to move quickly. The Committee Fair held on Sunday, September 1 allowed those attending to learn more about the committees and their work, meet the chair (or a representative) of each committee, and sign up to work with one or more committees. We greatly appreciate that several committees have new members.
The feedback, both formal and informal, to our newly formatted website and newsletter continues to be positive. We've also received some suggestions for improving both. We take each suggestion seriously and have already implemented some of them. We welcome your input! Let us know how we could better communicate with you by calling our office, 806.355.9351 or contacting submissions@uuamarillo.org
Read on for the news and events of the upcoming weeks. Be sure to visit our website, uuamarillo.org, to view information about our Fellowship, news and events, a calendar, and a blog of recent news articles of interest to the liberal religious community. Also find us on Facebook!
With welcoming arms for all,
The AUUF Beloved Community

Great Decisions: Threat assessment
|
Tuesday, September 10, 2013 7 PM - 8:30 PM
Threat assessment -- by Gregory Treverton How can the United States address the challenges of a weak economy, homegrown terrorism and nuclear proliferation? What threats and opportunities are presented by the ascendancy of China and by regime change in the Middle East?
Great Decisions is America's largest discussion program on world affairs. The name is shared by a national civic-education program, briefing book and television series administered and produced by the Foreign Policy Association. The Great Decisions program highlights eight of the most thought-provoking foreign policy challenges facing Americans each year. Great Decisions provides background information, current data and policy options for each issue and serves as the focal text for discussion groups.

| September is Hunger Action Month |
September 5 kicked off Hunger Action Month , a month-long effort in which everyone can be a part of the solution to end hunger nationwide. Here are a few ways you can help: SUPPORT SNACK PAK 4 KIDS Our Fellowship has long supported the Snack Pak 4 Kids program in Hereford, a program which ensures that children do not go hungry over the weekend. AUUF members and friends have brought so much peanut butter that, we understand, in Hereford it's known as "UU peanut butter!" This year the program has received several grants which provide the peanut butter as well as many of the other items we used to bring. The children's need now is for high-protein foods in 7 - 7.5 ounce cans with pop-top lids. Foods such as Vienna sausage, lasagna, spaghetti, and stew are in great need. The size of the can does matter! Larger cans crush the other items in the backpacks and become too heavy for young children to carry home on Fridays. Please bring your items to the Fellowship when you come on Sunday--or bring them by the Fellowship at 4901 Cornell during office hours, which are M-W-F 9 AM - noon. TAKE THE SNAP CHALLENGE Eat on just $4.50 a day. Shop for your meals with the daily average per person benefit provided by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly known as Food Stamps) to get a sense of some of the challenges faced by those struggling to put food on the table. Budget $4.50 for the day and share your experience with family and friends to raise awareness of the importance of this critical nutrition program. SEND YOUR MEMBER OF CONGRESS AN INVITATION Encourage your Member of Congress to support your local food bank and help us reach our goal of getting every member of Congress to visit a food bank in 2013. VOLUNTEER Contact the High Plains Food Bank and become a volunteer during September--and all year long.
