It's our pleasure!  Indies First/Small Business Saturday Indies First Day was created by author Sherman Alexie as a way of celebrating local independent bookstores on Small Business Saturday, calling on authors to be "superheroes for independent bookstores" by joining them in handselling books for a day. The authors not only sign their own books but also tell customers about some of their own favorite reads of late and help customers find good books. This year's national spokesperson for Indies First Day is Portland's own Cheryl Strayed, who was here handselling books at the inaugural Indies First Day two years ago. While Cheryl won't be able to be here this year -- she will be speaking at an event in Australia that day -- lots of terrific local authors will be here throughout the day between 10 am and 5 pm. You'll find a list of authors and a general schedule below. Because Cheryl is such a strong believer in Indies First Day, she has autographed a poster of her new book, Brave Enough, that we will be raffling off on that Saturday. For every $50 you spend here that day you will get an entry into a drawing for that very cool poster.   November 28th is also Small Business Saturday, a day begun by American Express to encourage  customers to "shop small" for the holidays to keep their neighborhood independent businesses alive and kicking. Here, here to that, we say! Indies First and Small Business Saturday: two good reasons to drop in and say hi on Saturday, November 28th. Polly Dugan (10 - 12) Author of So Much a Part of You and The Sweetheart Deal Sheila Hamilton (1 - 3) News director and morning show host at KINK.FM. Author of the recently published memoir All the Things We Never Knew: Chasing the Chaos of Mental Illness Justin Hocking (3 - 5) Author of the memoir The Great Floodgates of the Wonderworld, winner of the 2015 Oregon Book Award for Creative Nonfiction. Justin will read at the store with Suzy Vitello on March 17th as part of our Comma reading series. Joe Kurmaskie (12 - 3), aka "The Metal Cowboy" and author of five books about his bicycling adventures, including Mud Sweat and Gears. Joe's newest book, A Guide to Falling Down in Public: Finding Balance On and Off the Bicycle, will be published this spring, and he will read at the store on May 24th.
