  Greetings!

Happy New Year 2013!  The Christmas season officially ends this weekend with the celebration of the Baptism of Our Lord.  Thank you to all the wonderful stewards at St. Benedict who tirelessly helped through all our Christmas liturgies.  Thank you to all the ministries and stewards who worked throughout 2012 to share Christ's message with one another and the community through programs, events and services.  St. Benedict is the warm, welcoming community it is due to its wonderful parishioners!  Let us continue to be Christ for one another and for the world throughout 2013.  May Peace, Love & Joy be with you always!

~ Memorize the Nicene Creed

~ Attend Mass Every Week

~ Celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation Monthly

~ Study the Catechism of the Catholic Church

~ Read a Book About Saints or the Early Church

~ Meditate on the Our Father prayer

GREP Advent   Graded Religious Education Program

  (GREP) News

The Graded Religious Education Program has been very busy. We gathered together with parents to make Advent Wreaths in our annual Advent Workshop. On December 6th, 44 of our Second graders celebrated First Reconciliation. They will now begin preparing to celebrate the sacrament of First Communion on May 4, 2013. We also participated in a relief effort for the victims of Hurricane Sandy.  GREP worked in conjunction with Holy Spirit Church on Daniel Island and we collected cleaning supplies, books and blankets along with some monetary contributions.  Members of Holy Spirit traveled up North to New Jersey and delivered the items to some very grateful people whose lives were ravaged by the hurricane. Classes resumed on January 7 after the Christmas break.  There are no GREP classes on Monday, January 21st for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

March For Life 2012  Youth Group News

During the month of January youth ministry is focusing on Life: from setting individual goals; to being challenged to be more Christ like to others; to standing up for all aspects of Life. The members of youth ministry will take part in the SC Catholic Youth Rally for Life in Columbia on Saturday, January 12th and will also make a pilgrimage to the National March for Life in Washington, DC Thursday, January 24th through Sunday, January 27th.  The Sr. High youth will be watching the movie "October Baby" that looks at abortion from all sides throughout a young girl's life on Sunday, January 13th.

On Tuesday, February 12th Youth Ministry will hold a Spaghetti Supper fundraiser from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm with a Mardi Gras theme.  This will be a family friendly event and include dinner, a cake walk and silent auction.  Many volunteers will be needed for this event.  We need people to volunteer to make the spaghetti sauce and cakes.  Also needed are donations for a silent auction and other items for the event.  Please contact April Johnston if you are willing to help.  Cost for the event is $5 per person or $20 per family.

Meditation - God First Loved Us
Prayer reminds us that we learn to love only because we have glimpsed or sensed a first love, a supreme love.  "We love because God first loved us."  We find freedom as we are touched by that first love which will break us away from our alienation and separation.  It is a love that can soothe our compulsions to hoard and pretend we can organize the future.  It is a love that allows us to love others.  Prayer then becomes an attitude that sees the world not as something to be possessed but as a gift that speaks constantly of the Giver.  It leads us out of the suffering that comes from insisting on doing things our way.  It opens our hearts to receive.
