Chief Seattle's treaty oration of 1854

This version of Chief Seattle's oration at the Treaty of 1854 originally appeared in the Seattle Sunday Star on Oct. 29, 1887, in a column by Dr. Henry A. Smith.

Buckskin Quiver with short fringe

I received my order and am very pleased with it. I also want to thank you for your prompt and courteous service! I don't think I've ever had someone be as quick to respond and keep me up to date as well as you have. It started with your initial response to my asking if what I wanted was available right up to my order being shipped. I look forward to doing more business with you in the future. Again my sincere thanks.

Cherokee and Sioux courtship and wedding customs

In the very near future, I am planning on asking a woman of mixed Sioux and Cherokee descent to marry me. Her family history is obscure but I would like to recognize her partial native american heritage by making a traditional request for her hand, if such a tradition exists. If you could point me in the proper direction, I would be apppreciative.

Answer:

Hi Jim,

Most of the customs of the Cherokee and Sioux that would be practiced today apply more to the wedding ceremony than the courtship period.
