Sacheen Littlefeather
TV Slur Revives Debate About Sacheen Littlefeather

History was made in 1973 when Marlon Brando declined to accept the best actor Oscar for his role in The Godfather to protest the treatment of American Indians. His demurral, which was delivered on stage by a young Native American activist named Sacheen Littlefeather, generated intense controversy and criticism throughout the country. Almost 40 years later, some in Hollywood still seem to hold a grudge.

The Mayan calendar is set to end on Dec 21, 2012. There are many theories why this date ends the Mayan Calendar.
From an astrological standpoint, we know that out celestial bodies will align in such a way that has not happened in upwards of 26,000 years. We also know that our planet earth will complete what is known as the "precession of the equinoxes" or earth's wobble which also has not happened for nearly 26,000 years. Some say this will cause the poles to reverse and the changes in magnetic fields will cause catastrophic events that will change the world as we know it. Some people say say that is what happened when Atlantis was destroyed.

The date also is one of three future dates set by Nostradamus in his quatrains.

There is a common belief that according to the Mayan Calendar the end of the world will happen in Dec. 21, 2012. Mayan Elders say people believe that because they haven't gone to the source for an explanation - from the Mayans themslelves. After all, the Mayan people aren't an extinct culture.

The Maya calendar is actually a system of distinct calendars and almanacs used by the Maya Civilization of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, and by some modern Maya communities in highland Guatemala. These calendars could be synchronised and interlocked in complex ways, their combinations giving rise to further, more extensive cycles.

The essentials of the Maya calendric system are based upon a system which had been in common use throughout the region, dating back to at least the 6th Century BCE. It shares many aspects with calendars employed by other earlier Mesoamerican civilizations, such as the Zapotec and Olmec, and contemporary or later ones such as the Mixtec and Aztec Calenders.

Although the Mesoamerican Calender did not originate with the Maya, their subsequent extensions and refinements of it were the most sophisticated. Along with those of the Aztecs, the Maya calendars are the best-documented and most completely understood.

Actually, the Mayan calendar doesn' just come to an end on DEC 21, 2012. It simply marks the end of an Age. The calendar is made up of a series of three calendar "circles". They all just begin again, as they have in the past.

What do you think? Are we all doomed come December 21? If so, we better all hurry up and finish our holliday shopping.

Question:
How can Maashkinoozhe mean 'Ugly Pike' when Maash means 'flower'?

Answer:

Most native words used in our English names today aren't literal like they were in the original language, and are much corrupted, especially if they were hard to pronounce, as Ojibwe is for English and French speakers. Often explorers talked to neighboring tribes about other tribes first, before approching unknown peoples, so they picked up totally different words in another language than those used by the actual tribe they are referenced to.

Because the French got further out west before the English did, many English words based on Indian languages first came to the English speakers via bastardized French. Later, these got all jumbled together to form our modern names for different animals and other things when translated to English. Read the full answer.
