The Hunger-Free Iowa Initiative strives to eliminate hunger, but it goes beyond just feeding the hungry; it empowers and unites communities. We fight local hunger problems with local solutions. Here's what we've been up to.
September 2015 HFII Monthly Newsletter
The Hunger-Free Iowa Initiative is moving across Iowa, striving to get all Iowans talking about hunger related issues. Our goal is for all 99 counties in the great state of Iowa to be hunger-free. This goal can become a reality with help from dedicated people like you.

VISTA 50th Celebration: Iowa Poverty Summit

On August 26, Outreach, Inc. and the CNCS State Office hosted a poverty summit to celebrate AmeriCorps VISTA's 50 years of national service. VISTAs, national service leaders, and poverty-fighters from all over the state were in attendance. We started our day with a presentation on and discussion about the collective impact model by Rick McNary, Vice President of Private and Public Partnership for Outreach, Inc. The afternoon focused on applying the collective impact model to the VISTA year of service through small group discussion. The summit concluded with a meal packaging event, enabling us to donate 3,672 meals to the Northeast Iowa Food Bank.
Have a Hunger Dialogue or Meal Packaging Event

Having a Hunger Dialogue is a great way to bring together everyone in your community who has a foot in the food system and hunger alleviation. Dialogues bring people together to discuss the issues pertaining to hunger, pooling resources, and creating a hunger-fighting network.

Cydney Corwin (front) and the full HFII team
While the Outreach, Inc. team was busy packing 1.2 million meals in Washington D.C., the HFII team didn't slack on service. Together with AmeriCorps NCCC alum, Cydney Corwin, we packed 3,564 meals for distribution around Iowa.

The HFII, FoodCorps, and Green Iowa teams
The HFII team partnered with FoodCorps, Green Iowa, and the Des Moines Public Schools to work in the Carver School Garden. We spent the afternoon pulling weeds, harvesting produce, and having a great time.
Hunger Warrior Corner

Hunger doesn't just affect adults, and adults shouldn't be the only hunger-fighters. HFII's Hunger Warriors program works to bring kids of all ages into the hunger space to learn about global and local hunger, and what they can do to help make Iowa the first hunger-free state.
