2014 World Book Night  April 23

Our librarians will be sharing their love of reading with those who might not have discovered it yet! They will be offering free copies of good reads at all library locations, while supplies last, to encourage the reluctant reader to become ENTHUSIASTIC about books! 


 
Film and book giveaway 
Wednesday, April 23, 5-8 pm  
Copies of Sunrise Over Fallujah by Walter Dean Myers will be given away (while supplies last) at Stetson Branch, and a screening of Turtles Can Fly (2005) will precede a conversation with community veterans who deployed in the Middle East. Read more...

At each of the following sessions, a  rep from the Early Childhood Council of New Haven will provide information about  resources for young children.

Storyteller Mae Gibson Brown is featured. Participants receive a free copy of Strega Nona by Tomie DePaola.  At Stetson Branch.

Storyteller Zelphia Hunter is featured. Everyone gets a free copy of Mice Squeak, We Speak by Tomie dePaola.  At Wilson Branch.

Free screening of AMREEKA

A proud Palestinian Christian immigrant single mother and her teenage son struggle to adapt to life in small town Indiana.

Chris George, executive director of IRIS in New Haven, facilitates a discussion following the film about the (legal) U.S. immigrant experience. Everyone is invited!  

 

This event developed from New Haven Free Public Library's partnership with literacy organizations in New Haven, including IRIS, Adult Education, the Literacy Coalition and Literacy Volunteers. Learn to play the GUITAR

Mitchell Branch Library is hosting lessons for beginner and intermediate players ages 10+ on all four Thursdays in April, starting at 4:30 pm. Instructor is Don Wunderlee, who has studied many styles of guitar playing with many teachers. $20 for the series; BYO instrument. Please reserve your place by calling 203-946-8117.

Screening of Athol Fugard's Master Harold ... and the Boys

Saturday, April 12 at 2 pm
Long Wharf Theater staff will facilitate a discussion following this screening of a 1985 film adaptation of Fugard's play. The playwright is currently appearing in his play, The Shadow of the Hummingbird, at Long Wharf through April 27.

World Tai Chi & Qi Gong Day

Mitchell Branch Library will host an outdoor class of SunDo qi gong, yoga and meditation from 10-11 am with instructor Christine Ucich. Details here.
