WALSAA board members Marjorie Stieve, Sara Schoenborn and Karen Lee pose with Bucky at last year's Football Fire-Up.
Wisconsin takes on Tennessee Tech at Camp Randall Stadium on Saturday, September 7--and CALS alumni can stoke their enthusiasm before the game at the annual Football Fire-Up hosted by the Wisconsin Agricultural and Life Sciences Alumni Association (WALSAA). The event starts at 8:30 a.m. in the UW Foundation parking lot, 1848 University Avenue.
Guests will enjoy good food, have the opportunity to meet Dean Kate VandenBosch, take pictures with Bucky and bid on great items in the silent auction (football and basketball tickets, restaurant gift certificates, special gift baskets and more).
Registration must be postmarked on or before August 28. After that date, tickets will be for sale at the gate for an additional $5 each. More information at www.walsaa.org.
Back to School
UW-Madison classes start on Tuesday, September 3 and this year CALS will welcome approximately 600 new students to the college.
CALS new student orientation takes place this Friday and we are expecting so many new faces that we had to schedule orientation in two locations. Orientation will wrap up with an ice cream social on Henry Mall.
We are looking forward to another great year with an impressive group of students.
2013 CALS Honorary Recognition Awardees
The CALS Honorary Recognition and Distinguished Alumni Award committees have selected the following individuals to receive awards at the Honorary Recognition Awards Banquet and Ceremony on October 17:
Honorary Recognition: Roger Blobaum, Pam Jahnke, John Ruedinger and Allan Schultz
Distinguished Alumni Award: Henry Fribourg
Distinguished Service Award: Warren "Buck" Gabelman
Last year more than 17,000 alumni helped keep CALS and the rest of UW-Madison wonderful by making donations in support of our students, faculty and programs.
With gifts and grants accounting for 18 percent of the UW-Madison budget (tuition accounts for 16 percent), private support from alumni is increasingly important.
In October, UW-Madison again launches its annual Share the Wonderful campaign, providing alumni the opportunity to make a gift in support of the school or college of their choice. We hope you will consider supporting CALS. Of course, you can make a gift anytime you wish.
Beauty of Ag Research Shines in Photo Tour
CALS writer and photographer Sevie Kenyon BS'80, MS'06 recently spent time at some of the college's Agricultural Research Stations. The photo pictured is from the Rhinelander ARS--and you can see more here.
CALS Ag Research Stations are outdoor labs, classrooms and education centers all in one, and they are important resources for scientists and students alike.
You can also see a photo slide show of the Spooner ARS, the oldest of the college's research sites.
