UW-Madison Day at the State Fair

 |
CALS is always a big hit at UW-Madison Day at the State Fair and this year we expect more of the same.   On Wednesday, August 7, fairgoers will have the opportunity to see cheese- and sausage-making demonstrations (with samples!), learn what leaf-cutter ants are teaching us about bioenergy, and play miniature golf while getting the lowdown on lawn care from the experts.     In addition, there will be a pep rally at 1:30 and parade at 3:00 with the Bucky Wagon, Bucky Badger, UW Spirit Squad and the UW Marching Band.    Don't forget to bring new school supplies for a $4 discount on admission. Donations benefit Milwaukee-area children.

  CALS Photo Alphabet Contest

 |
To help encourage photo submissions to the  CALS Photo Alphabet Project, the CALS Office of External Relations is holding a photo contest from August 5 - 29, offering 12 coupons for a free scoop of Babcock Hall ice cream for the best photos received during the contest period. Three weekly winners will be selected and announced on August 8, 15, 22 and 29, for a total of 12 winners. When you see a "hidden letter" in a lab, lecture hall, building façade, greenhouse, garden or barn on the CALS campus or ARS grounds, take a photo with your smart phone or digital camera and send it to pix@cals.wisc.edu, the CALS Facebook Page or the CALS Twitter account.  For more info, click here.

Food Science Students Receive Honorable Mention
 | Wochi, a rice-flour waffle developed by a team of UW-Madison food science students, received honorable mention in the IFTSA and Mars Product Development Competition held in Chicago in July.
The gluten-free waffle is chocolate with raspberry filling and was inspired by a traditional Japanese treat that is cooked and consumed during Japan's New Year's celebrations.
Congratulations to students Emily Harbison, Ray Hirano, Katy Kaja, Kelley McNeil, Amy Parr, Ragita Pramudya, Jennifer Seol, Joe Smith, Molly Stasaitis and Di Wang for developing this tasty breakfast item worthy of mention.    |

 Virtual Biofuel Farming
 | A team of UW-Madison WID scientists including CALS own Steve Wangen, a postdoctoral researcher in UW-Madison's department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology, helped create Fields of Fuel, a video game that teaches the gamer to sustainably manage a biofuel farm. As a virtual farmer, the player manages their biofuel farm of corn and switchgrass. After the harvest, the game displays income, energy production and ecological impact. The game should be released for use in classrooms this fall. |

CALS Connected with Alumni in Barron County

 |
  | |
This future Badger posed for the camera, but not before placing her fedora on our beloved Bucky.
 |
Wisconsin's annual Farm Technology Days, the largest agricultural show in the state and one of the largest in the nation, was held at Breezy Hill Dairy in Barron County July 9-11. CALS was there to connect with alumni and chat with future Badgers.
About 75 alumni stopped by the alumni tent to discuss their time on campus and how things may have changed since they were students. At the end of the day on Wednesday, alumni gathered at Indianhead Holsteins in Barron, WI for the WALSAA Farm Technology Days picnic.
In total, over 35,000 people attended this year's event. The 2014 show will be in Portage County August 12-14 and CALS looks forward to connecting with alumni there.
