Treading on New Ground

On February 18, 2013, Mercy Maternity Center in Davao City, Philippines, saw their 20,000th birth, and SAMS missionary Sora Colvin was on hand for the experience. Sora and her husband Matt, (along with their children Hosanna, Naomi, Isaiah and Ezekiel) are SAMS' first missionaries to the Philippines, as well as our first missionaries from the Reformed Episcopal Church. Nicole Corlew is SAMS' first missionary to serve in South Africa, as well as the first full-time missionary sent by St. George's Episcopal Church in Nashville, Tennessee. Like the Colvins, she arrived in the field early in 2013, and says, "All of us are treading on new ground, and I find that quite exciting." Read More...

Though South Africa is new to SAMS-USA, it was the first place that SAMS' founder Allen Gardiner went as a missionary in 1834.  Read More...

NEW WINESKINS

Join us for the SAMS-USA Celebration Dinner at the New Wineskins for Global Missions Conference in Ridgecrest, North Carolina, on April 4, 2013.  A reception will begin at 4:15 p.m., with dinner starting at 5:00 in the Johnson Spring Building's Azalea Room.  The brief dinner program featuring Senders as well as the Rev. Gary G. Hoag, Ph.D., author of The Sower, will conclude 30 minutes prior to the start of the first plenary session for New Wineskins.   Come to the Johnson Spring Building (between Rhododendron Dining Hall and Mountain Laurel), Second Floor, Azalea Room, and register as soon as you arrive.  We still have several places at the table left for you.

If you are arriving early, you are welcome to come to the panel (featuring eight Anglican bishops and primates from around the world) in the Jim Henry Auditorium, Mountain Laurel Building on April 4, 2:30 PM.

Also, please drop by and introduce yourself as a Sender at our SAMS exhibit in the glass room directly across the courtyard from Spilman Auditorium in Pritchell Hall.

How Senders Can Be Involved in Missions

  1. Pray - "When all I can do is pray... I discover that prayer is not, after all, the last resort of the helpless, but the first and best help that I can offer to anyone in need." (Sora Colvin, Philippines)
  2.  Give - "We are humbled to see how God has been faithful to stir the hearts of friends, family, and yes, sometimes a stranger, to provide." (Mary Jane Dennison, Uganda)
  3. Communicate - "We are encouraged by the ones who drop you a letter or an e-mail just to say, 'We're thinking of you and praying for you...'" (Susan Park, Peru)
  4. Encourage - "Our senders are very much like Aaron and Hur, who held up the arms of Moses when he was extremely tired... [until] there was victory." (Todd McGregor, Madagascar)

Thanksgivings:

Praise God with Joe and Tina Rhodes for Tina's successful surgery having her thyroid removed with no signs of cancer. Pray for her continued healing.

Thank God for preserving Sora Colvin from serious harm when she lost her purse to thieves on a motorcycle in Manila. Pray that the Lord would help her and Matt with language learning and other cultural adjustments to living in the Philippines.

Juan Marentes praises God for all who prayed for him through his recent illness, and asks for continued prayer for his healing-especially his extremities-and for adjustment to getting around with his walker, especially when he returns to Belize.

Praise God with Grant and Wendy LeMarquand for two new church communities which have begun in Addis Ababa: one worshipping in Somali and one in Amharic. Pray for peace and security in Ethiopia, as robbery and cattle-raiding have been problems recently, and pray for the LeMarquands as they travel internationally over the next four weeks.

Thank God with Cathy Donahoe for God's grace and her supporters, and pray that she will find a balance between her ministering in two different cities.

Join with John and Susan Park in praising God for the new floor put in at Good Shepherd Cathedral in Lima.

Prayers:

Pray for all of those attending New Wineskins (especially our missionaries), for safe and pleasant travel and for family members left behind.

Pray with Malcolm Alexander for the support and continued growth and development of the Missionary Center (in la Colonia Cruz Roja, Honduras) under the leadership of Marķa, Marco and Alexander.

Continue to pray for relief efforts in Madagascar after a cyclone devastated crops and left 200 people homeless. Pray also for Bishop Todd's enthronement on April 21st and the inauguration of the newest diocese of the Anglican communion, the Diocese of Toliara.

Pray for Shirley Morris and she returns to the States for a sabbatical, and join her in praising God for all he has accomplished (and continues to do) in Hartley-Wintney, England.

Pray for Brian and Mary Jane Dennison's 14-year-old Ugandan friend, Mugisha, and his family as he struggles with advanced leukemia.

Pray for Summer and Guy Benton's safety as they travel back to Cambodia mid-April and for adjustment, especially for Guy, as he will be moving there for the first time.

Pray for Ian and Polly Montgomery as they return home to Vermont after four wonderful years in Peru. Pray for their continued work with the SAMS leadership on pastoral care opportunities among missionaries that may open up, and their continued assistance to Bishop Godfrey as advocates for Peru in the United States.
