Police Advisory: IRS Scam
The Minneapolis Police Department has received reports from people who were contacted by someone who claimed to be with the IRS.
The caller ID showed the Fifth Precinct's main number 612-673-5705. This is a scam. No government agency will ever call you asking for personal information like credit card numbers, bank account numbers, social security numbers, or more. Do not give personal information to anyone who calls or emails you unexpectedly, even if they claim they are with an official government organization or bank. Even if the caller ID appears to be legitimate, if something is suspicious or someone is asking you for personal information, do not give it. After you hang up, call the official phone number of the organization and verify directly with them if it is legitimate before giving any personal identifying information. Click here for more information.

Snow Removal
Minneapolis vows to clear busy corners, bus stops of snow beginning in 2015. The new standard for 2015 is to clear corners and bus stops at busy pedestrian areas within three days of a snow emergency - or after 4 inches of accumulated snow. The City reported that it may take until March to get services up to par with the new policy, though residents will start noticing a difference in January and February. Click here to read the Star Tribune article about the new policy. Please call 311 to report problem areas that do not meet the new standards.

A Low-Salt Diet for Lakes
A little salt goes a long way for managing snow and ice. But too much salt - which may be less than you think - can cause irreversible damage to nearby lakes and streams. The danger of ice and snow on roads and sidewalks is a fact of life in Minnesota. When that snow inevitably melts, however, most of that salt and sand wash directly into nearby waters. Salt poses a real threat to clean water. The chloride contained in one teaspoon of road salt can permanently pollute five gallons of water. Chloride upsets aquatic environments and can kill birds and some plants. Want to protect your local lake or stream from chloride pollution? Here are some easy ways you can help:
- Shovel! When you remove snow and ice manually the more effective salt can be. If possible, keep up with any major storms by doing a little at a time.
- Shovel more! Break up ice and decide if application of a de-icer or sand is necessary to maintain traction.
- Use salt sparingly. As a general rule, use no more than four pounds of salt per 1,000 square feet (an average parking space is about 150 square feet). One pound of salt is approximately a heaping 12-ounce coffee mug.
- Don't use salt when temperatures fall below 15 degrees (Fahrenheit). Salt stops working around this temperature. For traction use sand. Some de-icers do work in colder temperatures.
- Sweep up extra. If salt is visible on dry pavement, it is no longer doing any work and will be washed away. Use this salt somewhere else or throw it in the trash.
By using salt wisely, you can save money, time and the environment without sacrificing safety. Learn more at www.minnehahacreek.org/salt.
