Tips on cutting crime from the Minneapolis Police Department:
Reminder: lock your doors and windows, and record the make/model/serial number of valuables in your home, garage and car. (Important! Make sure you record the serial number on your bicycles!) A lot of our reported property crimes are burglaries in garages where the entry point is an unsecured or open door or window. The same goes with residential burglaries of homes. Even when someone closes the window, they sometimes forget to lock it and don't realize that someone can push the window open and enter. There are some very simple and cheap steps everyone can take to reduce their chances of a burglary happening in their home. Most of our reported theft from motor vehicle occur when a thief sees items inside the vehicle and breaks a window to access it. To prevent theft in your vehicle, remember to not leave any valuables inside. Even if you put it under a seat or put a blanket over it, thieves know what to look for. If you have to keep valuables in your vehicle, put it in the trunk BEFORE reaching your destination. Keep in mind that even your gym bag of dirty clothes could be tempting, as a thief doesn't know if there are valuables inside. - Watch a video on burglary prevention at: http://youtube/E7KZKUfj0bU
- Watch a video of a burglar explaining what draws him to a location by clicking here. (Note: this is from St Louis Park PD but the information is good everywhere)
- Find information on home inventory forms under Forms (and more prevention tips, including for bike theft prevention and theft from auto/auto theft prevention) here.
- Live in a condo or apartment building? Make sure you check out crime prevention tips at http://go.usa.gov/ysGF.
Have double hung windows? An alternative to pinning the windows the way the video describes is to use window vent stops/brass sash stops. See examples at right. Visit your local or favorite hardware store to purchase these types of window security locks or to ask questions about how to install/what is best for your home.

Autumn Fire Safety Tips
Fire Safety Tips from the Minneapolis Fire Department
With cooler weather, people are turning on their furnaces, and even enjoying the fireplace or bonfires. Enjoy the cooler weather safely with these tips:
- Have your furnace inspected by a licensed professional each year, to make sure it is working safely and efficiently
- If you use your fireplace regularly, have the chimney inspected and cleaned by a licensed professional
- Enjoy your recreational fire safely - only burn untreated wood, keep the fire small, and at least 25 feet from any structure. For more details on the Minneapolis recreational (bonfire) fire policy, follow this link: www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/fire/WCMS1P-090517Â
- Do not burn leaf piles, or other yard waste
- Make sure you have a working Carbon Monoxide (CO) Detector! As the weather turns cold, we are more susceptible to CO poisoning. CO detectors need to be placed within 10 feet of every bedroom
- Make sure you have a working Smoke Alarm. Ideally, smoke alarms should be placed inside every bedroom, in addition to one on every level of your home
- Test your smoke alarms every month, and change the batteries twice per year. A great time to remember to change your battery is Daylight Saving Time (Change your Clock, Change your Battery).
- Create a family safe escape plan! Pick a safe meeting spot outside your home, in case you need to exit to safety. Make sure everyone knows where to meet - and practice the plan! Ideas for a safe meeting spot include: a neighbor's house, a big tree close by, or a nearby fire hydrant. Pick a spot that works best for your family!
Also, a special ALERT to parents of children and teens: There is a new fad on YouTube called the "Fire Challenge", requiring participants to pour an accelerant such as nail polish remover, rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer on a body part and light it on fire. The behavior and the results are video-recorded and posted online for viewing by other teens. It isn't difficult to find examples by searching "Fire Challenge" online - but some of the videos are as hard to watch as they are to believe. PLEASE talk with your kids about this kind of behavior before it happens. Fire is a powerful force that gets out of control very quickly, and can easily send someone to the hospital with permanent, debilitating injuries, or worse. Last but not least, join Minneapolis Fire Department in celebrating National Fire Prevention week, with the annual celebration at the Fire Museum on Saturday, Oct. 4, from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. This is a FREE event! Explore the labyrinth of amazing displays of the Fire Museum, get a ride in a fire truck, enjoy a free hot dog, and more! For more information and directions, go to www.firehallmuseum.org.
