Southwest LRT

The Southwest LRT project is at a critical juncture.

Twin Cities & Western Railroad opposes the proposed freight reroute option through St. Louis Park. Click here to read the
Star Tribune article.

At its February 19, 2014 meeting, the Counties Transit Improvement Board (CTIB - the metro county board that funds
transit projects) told the Metropolitan Council that cities along the proposed route must agree on the project by June 30, 2014 or
risk losing money to the Bottineau LRT project. Click here to
read CTIB's letter to the Metropolitan Council.

This morning (March 4), the Minneapolis City Council is
scheduled to vote on a resolution opposing any co-location
option including the shallow tunnels design.

Status of Trammell Crow and Greystar Apartment Projects

The CIDNA Land Use and Development Committee has held discussions about two large apartment projects in CIDNA.

Trammell Crow Co. has preliminarily proposed a 6- or 11-story apartment project on the site of Tryg's Restaurant. The
Committee has preliminarily opposed these options and asked
the developer to propose a project that would respect the 56-foot (5-story) zoning height guidance. CIDNA will meet during the coming weeks to consider a revised proposal from Trammell Crow. See CIDNA's land use website for a detailed description
of the Trammell Crow proposals so far.

Greystar Investment Group is considering a project on the vacant site owned by Lakes Limited Partnership at Thomas Ave. S.
and West Lake St. east of the Calhoun Beach Club Apartments.  No proposal has been presented yet. The developer may hold discussions with the CIDNA Committee during the coming weeks.

No action will be taken on these projects by CIDNA in its board meeting on March 12.

Please follow our committee website at http://cidnalanduse.wordpress.com for the latest developments
and announcements regarding these projects.

You are encouraged to contact Bob Corrick, Chair of the Land Use Committee, at corrickcidna@gmail.com or 612-927-5599 with questions, comments, or feedback.

Midtown Corridor Alternatives Analysis

Study Recommends Rail on Greenway and
Enhance Bus on Lake Street.

A study of transit alternatives in the Midtown Corridor recommends a combination of rail in the Midtown Greenway and enhanced bus service on Lake Street as the best long-term transit solution for the corridor.

The recommendation, known as a Locally Preferred Alternative,
was approved on February 12, 2014  by the Policy Advisory Committee (PAC) for the Midtown Corridor Alternatives Analysis.
The group includes community and business representatives as well as elected and appointed officials from the Metropolitan Council, Hennepin County and City of Minneapolis

The recommended transit improvements will be advanced as
funding is available.

Rail would run immediately south of the Midtown Greenway
bike trail. The LPA calls for trips to be operated with single-car trains. Future analysis will identify the vehicle type and double/single-track segments.

Read the press release for more information.

Airplane Traffic Over CIDNA

The Federal Aviation Administration announced they will not implement RNAV for any departing flights from MSP at this time.

No timeline was provided for implementation, but the FAA committed to a robust outreach program to affected communities prior to implementation.

The FAA will, however, move forward with the (non-controversial) approved RNAV arrival procedures on a timeline still to be determined. The arrival flight paths will not change with the new technology.

For more information, go to the Metropolitan Airports Commission website.

Minneapolis Police Department Offers Comprehensive Crime Data Available to Citizens

Crime analysis and mapping data is now in the hands of the city's citizens.

The Minneapolis Police Department has launched a new web-based crime mapping tool called RAIDS (Regional Analysis and Information Sharing).

The new tool offers increased transparency and public access to crime maps and information. The information is updated daily, and the system stores crime data for the past 3 years.  Citizens now have the ability to customize maps in a variety of ways.  Data can be mapped by address, crime type or by date range.

The interactive crime map system can be accessed through the MPD's website at: www.minneapolismn.gov/police or download the Raids Online free mobile phone App.

Grants Available for Sewer Line Work

Property owners who need to repair or replace their sanitary sewer lines may be able to get some help paying for that construction.

The Metropolitan Council has made grant money available to
cover one-third of the cost, up to $2,000.

Eligible repairs:
  • Rehabilitation or replacement of sewer service lines from
the main sewer line to the house or building (not internal sewer plumbing)
  • Disconnection of foundation drains
  • The grants are available to any Minneapolis property owner.
  • Funds are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
