Apartment Discussions Continue in CIDNA

Discussions continue for two large apartment projects in CIDNA.

Trammell Crow Co. has proposed 6- and 11-story designs on the site of Tryg's Restaurant. In preliminary negotiations, the CIDNA Land Use and Development Committee has opposed these options and requested the developer to present ideas that would respect the 56-foot zoning height limit and adjacent 5-story Loop Condominiums. The developer has not yet responded to the committee's request. As a result, CIDNA will not consider a formal position about this project in its February 12th board meeting.

CIDNA also is holding preliminary discussions with Greystar Investment Group to build a 90 to 160-unit apartment project on the property owned by Lakes Limited Partners, which is the vacant site east of the Calhoun Beach Club Apartments at Thomas Ave S and W Lake St. CIDNA supported a large condominium project on this site in 2006. The project would have been 84 feet on West Lake Street, stepping down to 2-1/2 stories on the north side adjacent to the Greenway and nearby single-family residences. The recession stopped this project and many others in the city.

Please follow progress for these projects on our website at http://cidnalanduse.wordpress.com.  You can also see detailed drawings and perspectives about the Trammell Crow options on our website. No drawings or ideas are yet available for the Greystar project. You are encouraged to participate in the process and provide your perspective.  Public meetings will be announced.

In addition you may send questions and comments to Bob Corrick, Committee Chair, at corrickcidna@gmail.com, or just let us know that you would like to receive future emails about this topic.

Park Board Burning Brush at Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) wants to alert park and trail users that they may smell or see smoke during weekday, daytime hours coming from the Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden in Theodore Wirth Regional Park, through February 20.

Members of the MPRB's environmental services team will be burning brush piles at the Wildflower Garden from approximately 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. on several occasions throughout the next few weeks. A permit for conducting winter brush burns at this site has been obtained from the Minneapolis Fire Department.

Brush burns are conducted as an effective way to manage diseased tree debris as well as excess debris from storm damaged trees and invasive plant removal efforts. A majority of non-diseased tree debris is left in place in the Wildflower Garden to provide a habitat for wildlife and healthy ecosystem functioning.

The 15-acre Wildflower Garden, which is the oldest public wildflower garden in the nation, is open from April 1 through October 15 and is home to more than 500 plant species and 130 bird species. It provides 60,000 visitors annually with spectacular seasonal displays of native wildflowers in woodland, wetland and prairie areas.
