  • The location of freight rail service in the Kenilworth Corridor
  • Potential impacts of LRT construction on Cedar Lake and Lake of the Isles
  • Landscaping and greenscaping in the Kenilworth area

Draft results of these studies are expected in early 2014, when there will be more opportunities for public comment.

City of Lakes Loppet Ski Festival

Celebrating Winter Minnesota-style!

The 11th Annual City of Lakes Loppet Ski Festival -- January 31 - February 2 -- offers a good combination of participant and spectator activities and races for people of all ages and ability levels.

This year's Loppet Weekend will have a true festival-feel as nearly all of the 19 events will start and finish in a centralized area on Lake Calhoun. Races and activities include cross country ski races, snowshoeing, skijoring, dog sledding, snow-sculpture making, a carnival, and a kids' race.

For many the highlight is the Comcast Luminary Loppet
where people of all ages and experience levels ski, snowshoe, or walk around Lake of the Isles among thousands of candle-lit ice luminaries. It's truly magical. To ensure a high-quality experience for paid participants the Loppet Foundation is going to be more stringent about registration given the increasing popularity of the event and to be fair to those who have registered.

Please register online for the Comcast Luminary Loppet and other Loppet Weekend events (see website for complete schedule) at www.loppet.org.

Loppet Weekend, including the Luminary Loppet, is put on by the Loppet Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit that engages people of all ages and backgrounds in year-round outdoor activities. Proceeds from all of the events advance its youth programs, stewardship efforts, and overall work in the community.

A Low-Salt Diet for Lakes

A little salt goes a long way for managing snow and ice. But too much salt - which may be less than you think - can cause irreversible damage
to nearby lakes and streams.

When snow inevitably melts, most of that salt and sand wash directly into nearby waters.

Salt poses a real threat to clean water. The chloride contained in one teaspoon of road salt can permanently pollute five gallons of water.

Want to protect your local lake or stream from chloride pollution? Here are some easy ways you can help:
  • Shovel! When you remove snow and ice manually the more effective salt can be. If possible, keep up with any major storms by doing a little at a time.
  • Shovel more! Break up ice and decide if application of a de-icer or sand is necessary to maintain traction.
  • Use salt sparingly. As a general rule, use no more than four pounds of salt per 1,000 square feet (an average parking space is about 150 square feet). One pound of salt is approximately a heaping 12-ounce coffee mug.
  • Don't use salt when temperatures fall below 15 degrees (Fahrenheit). Salt stops working around this temperature. For traction use sand. Some de-icers do work in colder temperatures.
  • Sweep up extra. If salt is visible on dry pavement, it is no longer doing any work and will be washed away. Use this salt somewhere else or throw it in the trash.
By using salt wisely, you can save money, time and the environment without sacrificing safety. Learn more at www.minnehahacreek.org/salt.

Sewer Construction Update

Construction update for the Cedar Lake Area
Sewer Improvements Project.

Major construction activities along W. 29th St., Xerxes Ave. S.,
W. 28th St., Depot St., Sunset Blvd. and France Ave. S. have

the spring.

Final street restoration work will resume in the spring. Project email updates will resume in advance of the street restoration work.
