Southwest Light Rail Transit
The Southwest LRT project staff is recommending keeping freight in the Kenilworth corridor and running the LRT in shallow tunnels (see illustration below). The bicycle/pedestrian trails would remain in the corridor. Click here to read the full News Release. Project staff presented their recommendation to the Southwest LRT Corridor Management Committee (CMC) on October 2nd. The CMC Corridor is an advisory body made up of mayors of corridor cities, Hennepin County commissioners and others. The committee requested another meeting to further discuss the recommendations prior to voting on a resolution. The meet is tentatively scheduled for October 9 (time and location to be confirmed). The Metropolitan Council is scheduled to vote on the scope and budget of the Southwest LRT on Wednesday, October 9, 3:00 p.m., Council Chambers, 390 Robert St. N, St. Paul. If approved by the Council, project staffers plan to submit LRT plans in mid-October to the five cities and Hennepin County for municipal consent by late 2013. The following items will be in the municipal consent plans:
- Station locations
- Location of LRT tracks above, below or at ground level
- General dimension, elevation or alignment of routes and crossings
- Location and length of the LRT line
On Tuesday, October 1, Peter Wagenius, Mayor Rybak's transportation policy aide, gave members of the City Council's Ways & Means/Budget Committee a guided history of planning for the Southwest LRT route through Minneapolis. Most members of the Transportation & Public Works Committee participated as well. Wagenius gave Council members a preview of what is likely to happen once Municipal Consent is requested for the project. Click here to watch this informative and unusually frank presentation and discussion. (The Southwest LRT portion of the meeting starts at 59:20.)

CIDNA Fall Tree Planting Postponed Due to Drought
Current severe drought conditions have forced postponement of the CIDNA Fall Tree Planting, which aimed to put in several dozen new trees where the June 21st storm took out so many big old trees in and around Dean Park.
The Tree Planting is now scheduled for next spring.
CIDNA resident Donald Willeke reported that the Minneapolis Park Board and University of Minnesota officials thought it was just too risky to plant this fall, since many of the planned trees are rare varieties. Willeke said that based upon excavations in Dean Park and surrounding areas there is almost no sub-soil moisture down to at least 8 feet. The soil is just "powder dry," he said. The recent rains have been minimal, providing only about 0.3 inch of moisture in all.
Willeke urged everyone to water their presently existing trees, especially every kind of evergreen, or the losses of trees will be much greater over winter. Evergreens must go into winter adequately hydrated, he said, and at present that is definitely not the case.
