Southwest Light Rail Transit
The StarTribune is reporting that a Met Council advisory panel voted today to rejected the deep tunnel option in the Kenilworth corridor. Click here to see the story. The remaining options are for a shallow LRT tunnel in the Kenilworth corridor or to reroute the freight rail through St Louis Park. Metropolitan Council Chair Sue Haigh will delay a decision on the Southwest project for at least a couple weeks so that outside experts could consider other freight rail reroute options in and around St. Louis Park. Station Area Planning
Planners are looking for community feedback about Southwest LRT stations via an interactive site. Go to www.swbeyondtherails.com to: - Learn more about where stations will be located
- Pin comments to a map
- Respond to comments from your neighbors
- Post photos - what you like or what needs to change
Planners working on SW station area plans will be reviewing comments through late fall 2013.

Storm Damaged Sidewalk Repair Begins
Storm-tipped tree stump removal and sidewalk repairs began this week.
The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board will begin removing tree stumps remaining from the June 2013 storms. Once the stumps are removed, City of Minneapolis Public Works personnel will repair sidewalks and curbs damaged by tipped stumps at no charge to residents. The goal is to have the work completed by November 1. The stump extraction requires the use of large machinery and may temporary close some streets while the work is being done. Trail Improvements at Brownie Lake, Dean Parkway, Cedar Lake, and Lake Calhoun
The off-street trails along Brownie Lake, the west side of Cedar Lake, Dean Parkway, and Lake Calhoun will be reconstructed through October 31.
It is especially important for commuters--both cyclists and motorists--to plan ahead in order to avoid delays and accidents in this high-traffic section of the Grand Rounds. During the construction period, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board encourages pedestrians, recreational and commuter cyclists, as well as motorists to be aware of the upcoming trail closures and detours and to plan their routes accordingly. Protect our Tree Canopy
City Offers $25 Trees after June 21 Storm Losses
Minneapolis homeowners affected by the June 21 severe storm will have the opportunity to order a $25 tree to plant on their private property. The City of Minneapolis is offering about 500 trees to Minneapolis homeowners who lost trees on their properties during the June 21 severe storm. Ordering will begin at 8 a.m., Monday, September 9, and end September 20 (earlier if the trees sell out first).
Tree pickup will take place 2 to 7 p.m., Thursday, September 26, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, September 28 at the Minneapolis Impound Lot, 51 Colfax Ave. N. For program details, go to www.treetrust.org/city-trees
Trees Need an Inch of Water Every Week Trees on your property and the boulevard still need an inch of water every week throughout the fall. The heat and lack of precipitation are causing stress on the City's urban forest. Lack of water can make trees vulnerable to insects and disease and cause permanent damage to young and old trees alike. Trees up to five years old are especially susceptible. An effective way to water a tree is to turn on a slow stream of water (just so the hose is weeping) for a few hours. Watering in the evening after dinner time is most effective since it minimizes evaporation, and trees tend to take most of their water during the night.
