Southwest Light Rail Transit

Community Meetings on Freight Rail Issue

The Southwest LRT project office will host two community meetings July 17 & 18, 2013, on engineering concepts for
resolving the location of freight rail in the design of the project.
The content will be the same at both meetings so you are welcome to attend either session.

The concepts explore various possibilities for co-locating freight and LRT tracks in Minneapolis, as well as options to reroute
freight rail traffic in St. Louis Park to make way for LRT tracks.
The relocation concepts to be presented will be different than the one described in the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS).

Both co-location and relocation options would have impacts on residences and businesses, including the freight railroads.

Midtown Greenway Coalition Transit Survey

The Midtown Greenway Coalition (MGC) is conducting a survey to better understand the
needs of communities and businesses along the Greenway and Lake Street in the area known as
the Midtown Corridor.

MGC is talking to cyclists, drivers, and transit users alike,
in order to paint a big picture of how the Greenway fits into the community.

Click here to take the survey.

The results of the survey will help MGC advocate for the
Greenway during the Metro Transit's ongoing Alternatives Analysis study, which will help determine future transit options along the corridor. Three alternatives are currently being considered for the Midtown Corridor by Metro Transit:
  1. A Streetcar in the Greenway, paralleling the path, from the Lake St. Light Rail Station at Hiawatha to the future Southwest Light Rail.
  2. An Enhanced Bus on Lake Street with pre-boarding payment hubs, the capacity to delay red lights, and a different look, from the Lake St. Light Rail at Hiawatha to
    the future Southwest Light Rail.
  3. A combination of both options - Streetcar and Enhanced Bus, with an extension on the Enhanced Bus line to the intersection of Snelling and University in St. Paul.
To learn more about these proposals, check out Metro Transit's updates on the Alternatives Analysis, and stay up-to-date by following the Midtown Greenway Coalition's transit updates.

Public Hearings for Utility Municipalization

The Minneapolis City Council set two public hearings to consider authorizing the establishment of municipal electrical and gas utilities.

The hearings are:

10:00 a.m.
Thursday, August 1
To consider authorizing the establishment of a municipal
electrical utility.

10:30 a.m.,
Thursday, August 1
To consider authorizing the establishment of a municipal gas utility.

Location:
The public hearings will take place during the City Council's Committee of the Whole meeting in the City Council Chamber, Room 317
City Hall, 350 S 5th S  Map

The City is preparing to enter into energy franchise negotiations with Xcel Energy and CenterPoint Energy. State law currently limits Minneapolis' authority over utilities in franchise agreements; however, the City is seeking legislative changes to allow negotiations with Xcel and CenterPoint to explore how Minneapolis could make progress toward its goals for sustainable energy, improved air quality, equity and green jobs. The City wishes to explore options to achieve its energy goals outside the existing franchise agreement structure including the potential for municipalization of one or both energy utilities.

Neighbor Spotlight

Amateur cartographers and CIDNA residents
Dave and Claire Ruebeck have created a nautical chart of the four linked lakes in Minneapolis' Chain of Lakes covering Lake Calhoun to Brownie Lake.

Lake maps

The project spanned several years, drawing and confirming lake boundaries, trails, and amenities - then culminated recently in brand new depth measurements (soundings) of the entire chain.

Sailors and map enthusiasts, Dave and Claire have enjoyed spending time on the lakes since moving to Minneapolis 16 years ago.  They were surprised to find that a map of all four connected lakes with up-to-date depths including channels was not available.  So they took it upon themselves to collect the data and create a map from scratch.  The result is the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes Nautical Chart - a love letter to Minneapolis and it's world-class lakes and parks.  You can learn more about their project at  www.citylakemaps.com.
