The Election's Impact

With an intense, hard fought presidential election behind us, many investors have been asking what we can expect now that the results are in. Not surprisingly, here at Frye Financial, we are experiencing widely varying client reactions to the election outcome ranging from those who are sanguine, to some who are absolutely apoplectic.

As far as predicting effects on the market , regardless of what claims or prognostications may be emanating from any hysterics among the political/financial punditocracy, history is on the side of cooler heads prevailing. After studying the historical relationship between which party was in power and stock market performance, Pat Dorsey, former director of Morningstar equity research for over 10 years, found that there is no connection. In his words, "There is not one shred of conclusive evidence that stock market returns can be predicted by knowing which party controls Congress or the White House." Dorsey concludes that the only things affecting long term market performance are, "Earnings growth, dividends, and valuation....If you pay a reasonable price for companies that grow and pay dividends, you've hit the trifecta, regardless of who's in office."

Our answer to investors' election result questions? We believe, as always, that an effectively balanced portfolio based on a risk adjusted asset allocation model is the best strategy for potential long term investment success regardless of current political events.
