While age may or may not bring you more wisdom, it undeniably brings you some financial perks. For example, penalty free withdrawals can begin from IRA accounts at age 59.5; Full Social Security benefits begin for baby boomers at age 66; Medicare coverage begins at age 65 and discounts at some movie theaters begin as early as age 55.
A Perk You May Not Know About-
You Get To Keep Your Shoes On
While checking in at my local airport this past summer, in addition to the usual litany of instructions regarding fluids and laptops that most of us can now recite by heart, I heard an unfamiliar directive, "Keep your shoes on if you're 75 years old or above." Apparently, seniors at age 75 or older can run (ok, walk) through airport security checkpoints without removing their shoes, and throwing them into those ugly grey plastic containers that run through the X-Ray machines. Of course, the sweet old man on line next to me, upon hearing the good news, asked the TSA guy if he could keep his belt on as well. "No," retorted the burly TSA man loudly, "all belts and laptops in the bins!"....Now that was more like it. Oh well, change comes slowly.
And A Uniquely Floridian Perk- This Really Happened...
A few weeks ago, after numerous business appointments, I arrived for a very late lunch at a favorite local Italian restaurant. I was surprised to see how busy the restaurant was, and even more surprised to see the sumptuous looking appetizers, main plates and desserts being served at tables all around me. After scouring my menu and failing to find many of these enticing food items, I asked my server (and part owner) if I perhaps had the wrong menu. To which he responded, "Mr. Frye, you don't want the other menu, that's the early bird special menu." (Like heck I didn't!) I smiled weakly, held on to my foolish pride, and ordered from the more expensive, a la carte, regular menu.
