Did You Know?

"Baby Boomers are those individuals born between 1946-1964 and there are 79 million Americans in total or 26 percent of the current population...On January 1, 2011 baby boomers began turning 65. Between 7,000 and 10,000 of them will celebrate that birthday each day for the next 16 years."

Go Green!

"Many homes are much warmer than necessary in the winter. Try turning the heating down a touch. You're unlikely to notice the difference in temperature, but every degree Fahrenheit you reduce it by should save nearly 5 percent on your heating bill. If you are feeling chilly, put a sweater on, or do some chores before you turn up the heat. You'll probably find you're more than warm enough."

Top 10 New Year's Resolutions

New Years ResolutionsDid you make any New Year's resolutions? If so, did yours make the top ten list according to a recent summary by Albrecht Powell?

1. Spend More Time with Family and Friends:  50 percent of Americans vowed to spend more time with family and friends according to a recent poll conducted by General Nutrition Centers, Quicken and others. The poll indicated that work should not come first, but rather meeting up with a friend or family member. Business associates have always said at the end of your life nobody ever says, "I wished I had spent more time at the office."

2. Fit in Fitness:  We see lots of ads & commercials for weight loss/reduction programs, such as Weight Watchers, Nutri-System, etc. Studies not only show that regular exercise is directly linked to an increase in health benefits, but it also shows that exercise "reduces the risk of some cancers, increases longevity, enhances your mood, lowers blood pressure, helps you to lose and maintain your weight and even helps arthritis." So, why not add exercise to your daily routine?

3. Tame the Bulge:  You may or may not have heard that two thirds (66%) of adult Americans are considered overweight by recent studies. We know that losing weight is not easy, but setting reasonable goals to lose weight over a period of time and staying focused are two of the most important factors in a weight loss program. For millions of Americans who made a New Year's commitment to shed extra pounds, these are the keys to success in reaching weight loss goals.

4.  Quit Smoking:  If you've resolved to quit smoking this year, there is over-the-counter availability of nicotine replacement therapy now which provides easier access to proven quit-smoking aids. If you have tried to quit before and failed, try again. Studies indicate that "smokers try about four times before they quit for good". So check your local free support services, hotlines and smoking cessation classes to finally kick the habit and start enjoying a more healthier smoke-free life.

5.  Enjoy Life More:  Most Americans want to reduce the amount of stress and busy lifestyles and just "enjoy life more".  It's an important step to a happier and healthier you. Consider taking up a new hobby, a dance class, going to the spa or any form of artistic or recreational activity that you would like to do more often to bring more balance to your mind, body and soul.

6.  Quit Drinking:  Many people use the New Year to say, "This is the year that I am going to stop drinking." Heavy drinkers will do much better if they taper gradually versus going cold turkey, or learn to moderate their level of drinking. When you set a goal to quit drinking, there is help and lots of support groups available. If necessary, you can also look into a treatment-based program as well as support group for families of alcoholics.

7.  Get Out of Debt:  If finances have been a big stress in your life, this may be the year to resolve to get your finances under control. Getting a handle on your finances will help you this year and in years to come.

8.  Learn Something New:  This may be the year to take certain courses, learn a new language, take a computer class or make a career change. Becoming a life-long learner is healthy and most local colleges and universities offer distant and adult education programs.

9.  Help Others:  Becoming a volunteer can take many forms. Whether it's raising money for cancer or helping out with one of your favorite non-profit organizations, it feels really good to give your time and talent to others who really need your help. And, you can note volunteer work on your resume to show your talents and that you are giving back to society.

10.  Get Organized:  Organization is on most New Year's resolution top ten lists. Whether you want that organization in your office, your home or your life, there are many online tips and resources to help you get started and be more organized. In recent years there are more and more professional organizers who are also there to help you reduce clutter in your life.
