DVAR TORAH- Thoughts from the Principal & Educational Director
Dear Hillel Academy Family,

As the remainder of our students trickled out of Hillel Academy last Monday night, I could not help but be overwhelmed by a sense of excitement for the year that awaits us. This past summer, our dedicated faculty and staff worked tirelessly to ensure that the school year was ready to start without any hiccups or glitches. Sure enough, at 8:00 am Monday morning, the halls were filled with the sounds of tefilah, learning, and joy. The excitement grew as the day progressed, and the positive energy was palpable during the first day of school, programming, and orientations.

In Parashat Re'eh the Torah implores us,  "Acharei Hashem Elokekha teileikhu" - "You shall follow the L-rd your G-d." The Talmud in Masekhet Sota (14a) explains this phrase to mean, "Follow the attributes of the Almighty. Just as He clothes the naked, so shall you clothe the naked..."  One "follows" G-d by following His example of kindness and care and concern for people.

This year we have many exciting new changes at Hillel. We are excited for our expanded Advance Placement offerings including AP Psychology, Statistics, and Computer Science.  We have revamped our Ivrit Curriculum in Kindergarten through High School, by integrating Neta and Tal Am's newest curriculum. And we continue to improve our stem program by offering new science specials in the elementary school, increased robotics and coding courses throughout our school, and integrating maker spaces in our classrooms again this year. With all of these changes and advancements, it can be easy to lose focus of our core mission of  "Acharei Hashem Elokekha Teileikhu." However, no matter what improvements we make to our building, tweaks we make to our curriculum, or how many robots we build, our mission will always be the same. We will remain steadfast in linking our students to three thousand years of tradition by providing authentic Jewish education and strong moral development. We will teach our students to follow G-d through kindness and concern for other people. With G-d's help, this year will be one of growth and bracha for our students, our institution, and our community.

Elementary Division - Orientation and Middot Program
The Walk Beside Me Initiative, is a Chessed program that will run from now until Yom Kippur. Each week we will focus on one specific Middah to work on. I will distribute Pitgamim about each Middah with an activity for you to use in your classrooms. You may use that to help teach your students about the Middah. You may also incorporate your own ideas and activities into your lessons, I just didn't want to take out too much of your already busy schedules.

Each grade will be given a week with a specific Middah to "research." They are then going to present that Middah at the end of the week at the Friday Oneg. They can prepare a song, a skit and some facts/phrases about it. If any of you would like some specific materials, I am more than happy to help. The schedule will be as follows:

Week 1: 8/29-9/9- 4th Grade Chessed (Kindness)
Week 2: 9/9-9/16 3rd Grade Dan Lekaf Zechus (judging others favorably)
Week 3: 9/16-9/23 2nd Grade Emes (honesty)
Week 4: 9/23-9/30 1st Grade Hakarat Hatov (showing appreciation)
Week 5: 9/30-10/7 K Shemirat Halashon (speaking nicely)

Stop in Morah Leah's Toddler room on a Thursday and you will find the kids making challah.  It's not only a great way to get ready for Shabbos, it also meets early learning standards in math and science!
