Jarrett House Celebrates Milestones

Since July, 61 children and youth have received crisis stabilization support through the Jarrett Crisis Stabilization Program. The previous Jarrett House residential home was transformed to accommodate the program, and a recent open house highlighted the changes, including expanded staffing, increased psychiatry resources, and building renovations to support the intensive services and to encourage increased family involvement.

The new Crisis Stabilization Program is part of a state effort to serve children, ages 5-14, in need of intensive services closer to their home and community. It serves a critical need in our community when children are experiencing an acute psychiatric crisis. The program allows children who might otherwise be sent to inpatient treatment in Brattleboro to stay in our community, close to their family and natural supports.

 Rocking Horse Program Provides Hope

Amid the recent discussion about the need for more treatment programs for opiate addiction, HowardCenter continues to provide numerous programs and services for those in recovery, including the Rocking Horse program. The program focuses on the specific needs of mothers in recovery from opiate addiction. The program relies on a 10-week long curriculum, based on topics such as self-esteem, relationships, communication skills, and stress reduction.

Sheryl Bellman, Director of Crisis Services, says the women benefit from the structured workshops, the social connections, and the positive reinforcement they receive from the group leaders and each other. Participants are referred by community health providers and non-profit organizations. Transportation and on-site childcare are provided, eliminating barriers to participation.

At each session, the women receive a small wrapped gift--a candle, a calendar, or bath soap--for encouragement. Recently, the women all received key chains. The present prompted one participant to say,"When I get a key, I'm going to use this." It was a poignant statement from a woman who was dealing with homelessness, and it underscored the challenges the women face in their struggle to achieve a sustained recovery and their hope for the future.
