Sun Shines for Annual Community Friends Picnic |
|
About an hour before the picnic celebration was set to begin on Sunday, June 2nd, it started to pour. Prepared for another wet celebration, we still set up for the event under the pavilian. Just before 4pm, it cleared up and we even had some sunshine for the next two hours! Shortly after everyone left, the rain started up again. Thank you to everyone who came to celebrate with us and to the weather for cooporating for a couple hours!
Along with the nice weather we had delicious food, games, chalk art, and even some swimming in the freezing lake! Many thanks to our Advisory Board members, Betsy, John, Debbie, Sheila, Amy and Beth, as well as Ruth for their help in making this event a success.

Summer Scheduling Challenges |
|
This article is reprinted from last year
It's the middle of June, a mentor is driving her mentee home from their weekly Saturday outing and they are discussing their plans for next week's outing. The beach? An outdoor concert? Hiking? After much discussion, they make plans to hike Camel's Hump. A week later, the mentor goes to pick up her mentee and is surprised to learn that her mentee is not home- she has gone to visit her father out-of-state and will be gone for the next 6 weeks. The mentor already has plans to go away for a two week vacation later in the summer, so this could mean that she won't be able to meet with her mentee for two entire months.
This situation is not uncommon for mentoring pairs once summer begins. As soon as school is out, schedules for both mentees and mentors begin to change and regular outings become much more difficult to schedule. Now is a good time to talk to your mentee's family about the upcoming summer months and compare calendars.
It's also important to check in more than usual in the summer months. Call before you head over to pick up your mentee. In the summer, there's a much higher chance they've made last minute plans with friends.
If it is going to be hard to meet with your mentee consistently over the summer, try to find other ways to stay in contact. Postcards are an easy, fun way to stay in touch, but phone calls or emails are great ways to share stories about summer happenings and keep in contact. |

Congratulations to one of our own! |
Every year, the Vermont Student Assistance
Corporation (VSAC) awards a $1,000 grant to one high school student who has participated in a mentoring program for at least 2 years. This year, we are extremely proud to announce that one of our very own was chosen to be the recipient of this award! The mentee in our program is graduating from a local high school and will be attending a state college in the fall. We wish her the best of luck as she continues on with her education.
This money is awarded every spring, so for the mentees in our program who will graduate high school soon we highly recommnend applying. VSAC publishes a booklet each year containing information on eligibility for different scholarships and how to apply. We would love to hear about more of our mentees receiving this award in the future! Patrick Leduc from the VSAC scholarship committee reported to Catherine, "[CFM mentee] is exactly the kind of student we are looking to give this money to." |

Have you tried using your Mobius Discount Card at Palace 9 Cinema lately? Or attempted to check out a movie from Waterfront Video? If so, then you were probably disappointed.
Palace 9 Cinema was recently sold to Merrill Theatres and the new management is not currently recognizing the previous ownership's discount. Mobius is currently working with the owner to discuss moving forward, but for now they are not accepting the discount, which was a free ticket for the mentee. Also, Waterfront Video has closed as of April 30th. Luckily, the weather is warming up so mentor pairs can find fun activities to do outside, such as going for a hike, having a picnic, or checking out Shelburne Farms!
