Celebrating 140 Years of Service to the Community

This year marks HowardCenter's 140th Anniversary.
Our organization began in 1873 when 12 Burlington women formed a committee to assist those in distress. Today, HowardCenter provides support to 15,000 individuals and families each year.

A section of the Home for Destitute Children, a forerunner for the many services now provided by HowardCenter's Child, Youth, and Family Services. The Home was established to serve children who were orphaned following the Civil War.

 Robin Pesci, Director of Howard Center's First Call for Children and Families, was recently nominated to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline Steering Committee for a three-year term.
Pesci has provided leadership to the community regarding mental health crisis services, disaster response, and suicide prevention. Vermont's suicide rate is the highest of all northeastern states. In 2012, First Call responded to more than 15,000 calls, most of which were a suicide concern.
Pesci will be leaving First Call to accept another position within the organization. Charlotte McCorkel will succeed her.

Michael Gray, a former HowardCenter employee whose career with the organization spans three decades, received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the KidsSafe luncheon.
In presenting the award to Gray, Executive Director of Vermont School Boards Association Steve Dale, said, "Mike has been a critical component in promoting and improving services, always with the best interest of the kids and families with whom he was working."
HowardCenter's Autism Spectrum Program was recently cited in a Vermont Department of Health article recognizing April as Autism Awareness Month. The Autism Spectrum Program provides intensive services to individuals with autism spectrum disorders, ages 2-21 years. |

May 17: Golf Tournament Benefits Youth Program
On May 17, area golfers will gather at the Basin Harbor Club in Vergennes for the annual Vert Mont International Executive Housekeeper's Association HowardCenter Charity Classic. Now in its 18th year, the event has raised more than $116,000 to support programs for HowardCenter youth. For several years, contributions from the event have benefited the Outdoor Challenge Program.
The Outdoor Challenge Program annually serves about 100 children in residential and day treatment programs. The Program provides therapeutic after-school, weekend, and summer outdoor activities.

June 20: Big Night, to Benefit Client Employment Programs
This year's signature community event will feature--and fundraise for--HowardCenter client employment programs.
HowardCenter offers training and placement support for hundreds of clients each year, including those who have a developmental disability or autism, are recovering from substance abuse, struggling with mental illness, or returning to the workforce after incarceration.

New Financial Directors | | |
Sandy McGuire has been selected as HowardCenter's Director of Finance and Administration. She succeeds Charles Stringer who will retire in June. McGuire came to HowardCenter in 1999 and is currently the Financial Manager for the Child, Youth, and Family service area (CYFS). Previously, she worked in the private business sector. McGuire lives in South Burlington.
Tom Borys will succeed Sandy McGuire as Financial Manager for CYFS. Borys has been a member of the finance team since 2005. He lives in Hinesburg. |
