LEARNING COMMONS OPENS!

On Monday students got their first official look at their new learning and gathering space. The Upper School library at Jackson Academy was renovated this summer into a multi functional Learning Commons, a central hub for student learning, collaboration, and innovation. The space is inviting, colorful, open, and light-filled, but it is a workhorse when it comes to flexible learning space.

The Learning Commons allows for student collaboration and study, access to technology and other learning resources, and space for free time and student entrepreneurial efforts. It provides options for how students work individually or in groups, with or without technology. Specific areas include spaces for active learning, collaboration, small groups, medium groups, a learning theater, a media/broadcast room, traditional stacks, gathering spaces, and flexible classrooms with moveable walls.

The new space has many interesting features. The media/broadcast room has a chromakey, or green screen, on one wall for use during video production. All of the furniture throughout the space is flexible and modular including rolling "desks" in the classroom spaces with movable work surfaces that reposition quickly for collaborative assignments. The Learning Commons will feature a student-run coffee shop. The coffee shop will give students real-life experience operating a business. Students are currently working on a business plan for the coffee shop.

The Learning Commons project is funded by major commitments from individual families and gifts to the JA Annual Fund for a total of $680,000 in cash and pledges. The Jackson Academy Association, JA's parent organization, has pledged $300,000 of support for the project. Donors were given a tour of the facility Friday before the football game.

BRING TISSUE FOR BLAIR E. BATSON THIS WEEK

Last year, a JA student who had been served by the Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children learned that the hospital had a great need for facial tissue for patients and families. Our Middle School responded by organizing a very successful drive, and a van full of tissue was packed and delivered to the hospital. The need for tissue is recurring, so the second annual tissue drive is scheduled for September 12-16. If your family would like to participate, please bring standard size, rectangular flat boxes of facial tissue to homeroom class or to counselor Sarah Ryburn Mealer's office in the Upper School. The patients at Batson's Hospital and their families are very appreciative of our help.

WE'RE BETTER TOGETHER!
JA JOINS 'GO GOLD' EFFORTS

Friday at the pep rally and the football game, love and support for children and families impacted by cancer was emphasized. Gold clothing, special T-shirts, gold glitter, and gold ribbons abounded as the JA community rallied to recognize and honor the courage of children affected by cancer during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

Go Gold is an outreach effort in area schools that helps educate students about types of childhood cancer and how they can help a classmate who is struggling with it. Go Gold also supports the Campbell Bulldog Fund, established to fund childhood cancer research at the Mississippi's Children's Cancer Center, located in Blair E. Batson Children's Hospital at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

"We raised $1001.00 Friday night, and the goal was to bring awareness to our campus. The JA campus came together and proved once again that we are always better together," said Paula Pratt, associate dean. Signs at the pep rally and game honored members of the JA community who have experienced cancer.

Ben Sigler is one JA student whose name appeared on a sign. Blair E. Batson Hospital asked Ben to participate in the Go Gold campaign, and his parents attended the pep rally where they were amazed to see the entire student body painted in white and gold. Ben closed half time events at the game with a brief speech thanking everyone for supporting the Go Gold campaign.

"It meant a lot to our family for JA to do this. It was so moving to see all of the parents and children standing up for the kids who are battling or have battled cancer. JA has been tremendously supportive of our family ever since Ben was diagnosed two years ago," said Corrie Sigler, Ben's mother. "Seeing Ben's name on banners/cards, etc. reminded us just how big this family is that we are a part of. We have felt so blessed to have so many people around us who are willing to love on us and help wherever they can. It was so great talking with people and sharing Ben's story."

Go Gold was established by David and Jill Dale, who lost a son, Campbell, to cancer in 2015. The Dales are supporting efforts to "find new cures for childhood cancers and to educate children and adults about childhood cancers and their long-term effects," according to UMMC's website.

MAKER STATION SATURDAYS BEGIN OCTOBER 1

A time and space where children explore the unknown, take risks, and create items beyond their imagination...Jackson Academy is launching a new program to encourage innate creativity in young children.

Today's learner uses a more active form of thinking than previously stated in Bloom's Taxonomy, which organizes intellectual behavior into tiers of learning. The updated Bloom's Taxonomy hierarchy of learning mirrors the needs of today's learner (shown right).

The Maker Movement is a unique combination of artistic expression, technology, and primitive craftsmanship. Learning by doing or "making" has been happening from the beginning of time, and this movement is making a comeback. Maker Station Saturdays will be set up quarterly for all students across the Metro Area. This will be a time where children gather and celebrate the inventor inside, yearning to be discovered.

Bloom's Taxonomy

Come join us for a day of pure, creative fun and opportunity that lies just beyond the edges of our minds. Each Saturday will be a Maker's Station where children will problem solve their way though small projects to be shared and tinkered with for days beyond.

We will be on Assembly Schedule, which will allow our students ample time to visit with each of the community partners.
