ON YOUR MARK, GET SET, GO...RAIDER RACER!
When the STEM crew finished production this week, the Raider Racer sported a blue and white exterior. Of course, what other colors would do? Jackson Academy fourth graders are designing, building, and racing an electric car. The new program at JA is one way of fostering interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields. This initiative is part of a program called Greenpower that seeks to advance education of technology and sustainable engineering. Besides learning teamwork, students become more aware of how various challenges of society can be solved through engineering and other STEM related fields. Every fourth grader has had an opportunity to drive the Raider Racer, which runs 17-18 miles per hour. "The same sentiment was expressed by each of the children after they drove it around the football field: 'It went a lot faster than I thought it would!'," said Cliff Powers, Lower School STEM teacher. SPEECH & DEBATE: SACRAMENTO BOUND!
The Speech & Debate Team includes: (from left, back) Brianna Cry, Cory Tirman, Hays Rogers, Dolph Maxwell, Reggie Fullwood, Dalton Gibson, Natalie Ford; (front) Burkette Moulder, Samantha Brown, Reese Overstreet, Caroline Nall, Lucy Clement, and Chloe Owens; (not pictured) Kelsey Ford.Members of the Speech & Debate Team have attended nine tournaments so far this year learning new skills, honing existing skills, and experiencing success! In February, JA hosted the Jackson Catholic Forensics League speech & debate tournament, a qualifier for the National Catholic Forensic League's national tournament. Speech & Debate coaches from JA, Prep, and St. Andrew's coordinated the event. Eleven JA students competed in the JCFL qualifier. Eight students in teams of two debated the February Public Forum debate topic: Resolved: The United States federal government should adopt a carbon tax. Others competed in several different interpretation, debate, and public speaking events. JA students Natalie Ford and Chloe Owens came in fourth overall and qualified for the NCFL's grand national tournament in Sacramento, California in May in Duo Interpretation. Brianna Cry earned first alternate (5th overall) in Dramatic Performance, and Hays Rogers earned fourth alternate (8th overall) in Congressional Debate. Brianna will also be traveling to California for the national tournament competition. JA Speech & Debate coach Lauren Ray is excited about the team's first year. "We're so proud of our students, and we're so thankful to each volunteer who helped us make the JCFL qualifier a successful weekend for our school and our state!"
