Libertyville Area Site Given Federal Designation

The Outpatient Adult Mental Health Services facility at 18698 Peterson Road near Libertyville will be operating as a federally qualified health center starting in mid-February. The designation means that patients at this facility (the eighth federally qualified center in the Health Department system) will soon have convenient access to medical services at the site.

Dental Hours Extended in Round Lake Beach
With the addition of a full-time provider, Monday evening hours are available for dental visits at Midlakes Health Center, 224 Clarendon Drive, Round Lake Beach. Dental hours are now 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Mondays. The additional hours on Mondays will help  accommodate students referred from the health center at Round Lake High School. For more information on dental services, click here.

Giving Children a Good Start for Their Teeth

Thanks to a $9,900 grant, the Health Department is providing a year-long dental screening program for about 200 children in the Head Start program located at Community Action Partnership in Waukegan. Starting in February, exams, fluoride varnish applications and risk assessments will be available to enrolled children. Referrals will be made to dental programs operating at Health Department health centers or to a local pediatric dental practice.

Winter is an ideal time to test your home for radon, a colorless, odorless radioactive gas that can be in your home or apartment, no matter what the age of the structure. The Health Department has short-term test kits available for $10 each. The kit can be mailed to you for an additional $2. Click here to learn more.

Dear Lake County Residents:

As part of the Lake County Opioid Initiative, we recently played a key role in saving the lives of two residents who overdosed on heroin. In both cases, officers trained by the Health Department administered an opiate overdose reversal compound called Naloxone, which saved the residents' lives.

Between 2008 and 2013, the number of annual fatal opioid overdoses in Lake County has ranged from 47 to 63. Due to the growing concern about opioid overdose, the Health Department has trained 90 police officers to use Naloxone and has secured a $1.4 million donation of EVZIO, the auto-injectable version of Naloxone, for the officers' use.

In addition to training officers, the Health Department is training patients and friends and families of patients to use Naloxone. Visit the Lake County Opioid Initiative website for more information on efforts to address opioid overdoses on a local level.

Sincerely,

Tony Beltran
