Healthy Lake County

Featured topics in this month's Healthy Lake County video include: signing up for the online health insurance marketplace before the March 31 deadline; Kick Butts Day; eating healthy; and Outpatient Mental Health Services' move from Round Lake Park to Libertyville. It takes just a few minutes to watch.

World TB Day
World TB Day is a time to raise awareness about TB-related problems and solutions and to support worldwide TB-control efforts. Great strides have been made to control and cure TB, but people still get sick and die from this disease in our country. Locally, the Tuberculosis Program in Lake County works to prevent, control and monitor the disease. More than 3,000 individuals received tuberculin skin testing in 2013, plus more than 100 homeless were screened and tested for TB at the beginning of the temporary shelter season through the PADS homeless shelter program.

Reduced Water Testing Rates

Private well owners can have their water tested at reduced rates from March 3 through 13 in observance of Groundwater Awareness Week. It is important for all users of private wells to have their drinking water tested annually to see if what they are drinking meets minimum standards.

Kick Butts Day in March

March 19 is designated as Kick Butts Day by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, but every day is Kick Butts Day at the Tobacco Free Lake County program, which works with youths to encourage other youths to stay tobacco-free, plus raise awareness about problems caused by tobacco.

Tony Beltran
Dear Lake County Residents:

Have you thought of trying crunchy vegetables instead of chips? How about keeping fruits or vegetables handy for that afternoon snack?

March is National Nutrition Month and this year's theme is "Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right." So when you are grocery shopping, make a point of trying a new fruit, vegetable or whole grain every week. You can start small by picking a different type of apple, a different color potato, or a new flavor of whole-grain rice. Enjoy!
