Tony Beltran
Dear Lake County Residents:

It's the beginning of the holiday season. I enter into this time of year with a sense of celebration and a small dose of reservation. This is the time of year when many people, including myself, set aside their usual self-restraint and indulge in tasty foods that include plenty of fat, sugar and salt that they might be more likely to bypass the rest of the year.

But, dietitians at the health department have assured me that it is possible to enjoy the scrumptious dishes of the season and continue to eat healthily. The key is to modify your favorite holiday recipes. You often can reduce the amount of fat, sugar and salt without sacrificing flavor in healthy recipes. Click here to continue.

Sincerely,

Tony Beltran, M.B.A.

Millions of children and adults live with diabetes, but it requires health management. One thing diabetes patients can do to prevent complications down the road is to check their feet each day.
With the holidays fast approaching, remember to keep your health in mind as you prepare that feast. Precautions should be taken to prevent food borne illness. Key reminders are to avoid cross-contamination, maintain foods at the appropriate temperatures and practice good hygiene.
Enjoy the benefits of healthier living by taking the pledge to protect your loved ones and those around you from exposure to secondhand smoke. The Great American Smoke Out is on November 21. On this day the Health Department's Tobacco Free Lake County program as well as REALITY Illinois teens are encouraging community members to take an important step toward protecting themselves as well as their loved ones around them by quitting. Pledges may be sent to TFLC@lakecountyil.gov
