Waukegan Cares
Walk for Awareness
Waukegan Cares Walk for Awareness is planned for Saturday, Sept. 21 along scenic Sheridan Road in Waukegan.
The event is designed to support local efforts to prevent suicide on the local level. The 5K walk registration will take place behind the Genesee Theater in downtown Waukegan between 11:15 a.m. and noon. The step off is any time after registration. The entry fee is $25, which includes an event t-shirt and one free raffle ticket. A festival with music, local food vendors and kids games is also being held from noon until 5 p.m. The monthly Waukegan Art Walk begins after the festival.
The walk is sponsored by the Waukegan Cares Foundation, the City of Waukegan and the Lake County Suicide Task Force of which the Lake County Health Department is a member.
In observance of National Immunizations Awareness Month in August, the Lake County Health Department/Community Health Center is reminding parents to include immunizations on their back-to-school checklists, whether their children are heading for elementary school, high school or college.

Kids 1st Health Fair Marks 21st Year
|
About 400 volunteers, including 100 staff members from the Lake County Health Department, helped get more than 800 children from low-income families ready for school during this year's Kids 1st Health Fair.
Held on August 7 at Miguel Juarez Middle School in Waukegan, the event included dental and physical exams as well as immunizations and foot exams. The fair was organized by the Health Department, Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science and United Way of Lake County.

Fox Lake residents can get free microchips for their pets thanks to the Fox Lake Police Department during the low-cost pet vaccination clinic from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, August 24 at Lakefront Park, 71 Nippersink Blvd., in Fox Lake. The Health Department's Animal Care and Control Program is holding the event in cooperation with the police department and the Fox Lake Parks and Recreation Department.

Mosquito pools (or batch of mosquitoes), sampled July 25 in Deerfield and July 26 in Lake Villa Township have tested positive for West Nile virus. The mosquito pools are the first confirmed indicators of the disease's presence in Lake County in 2013.
