Dear Lake County Residents: I am happy to join the Lake County Health Department and Community Health Center. Since I started a couple of weeks ago, I have had the chance to experience some great work firsthand. For example, LCHD/CHC has begun efforts to become accredited through the Public Health Accreditation Board. In addition, LCHD/CHC has applied to become a Primary Care Medical Home through the Joint Commission (JCAHO). Both of these efforts signify the Department's commitment to continue to improve service to the residents of Lake County. The Department is built on a solid foundation and I hope to continue that tradition as I lead the department into the future. For those who don't know me, I have been in healthcare for over 20 years and started my career at University of Illinois at Chicago Department of Family Medicine. Later I transitioned to work with Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs). I have worked with small organizations as well as the largest FQHC in the nation, Access Community Health Network. Immediately before coming to LCHD/CHC, I was the First Deputy Commissioner at the Chicago Department of Public Health. At CDPH, I had the opportunity to participate in the development and implementation of Healthy Chicago, the first comprehensive strategic plan focused on health for the City of Chicago. This is an exciting time in healthcare with lots of changes. We will begin to see significant changes through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) later this year. In Lake County, it is estimated that over 71,000 adults do not have insurance. With the ACA enrollment starting this October, the majority will become eligible for either Medicaid or commercial insurance through the Marketplace. LCHD/CHC will be continuing to work on the strategic plan for the organization. LCHD/CHC will continue to build partnerships and coalitions with community partners to continue to improve the health of the residents of Lake County. It is exciting to think of all the opportunities that could accompany these changes. My main goal is to safeguard the health and safety of all residents of Lake County. I look forward to working with the staff and partners to accomplish this goal. Sincerely,
Tony Beltran, M.B.A.

Patients and Volunteers Dig in on "Dig Day"
|
Cooking demonstrations, tasty treats, activities for kids, and live classical music were all part of the annual "Dig Day" event on May 18 at the North Chicago Community Health Center.
Patients in the "Be Well - Lake County" diabetes management program and volunteers came together to plant a communal garden that will provide fresh fruits and vegetables to patients throughout the summer. The Be Well - Lake County program is sponsored by the Lake County Health Department and North Shore University HealthSystem.
